The University of Iowa was founded on February 25, 1847, 59 days after Iowa became a state. The first faculty offered instruction at the university in March 1855 to students in the Old Mechanics Building, situated where Seashore Hall is now. In September 1855, the student body numbered 124, of which 41 were women.

The University of Iowa Libraries is the largest library system in Iowa and 9th in materials expenditures among U.S. public research libraries (ARL FY10 data). The University’s Main Library, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, 5 branch libraries, and the Law Library contain more than 5 million volumes.

Student Health & Wellness provides primary medical care for registered University of Iowa students--the same care you would receive from a healthcare provider in your hometown. We have physicians who are board certified in family medicine, physician assistants, psychiatrists and a gynecologist so that we can provide primary care for almost any health concern that may arise.
Intramural Sports
The University of Iowa Intramural Sports Program offers an extensive range of sport leagues, tournaments, and events for University of Iowa students, faculty and staff. Intramural Sports are designed for the competitive and experienced athlete, as well as those looking to participate in a fun activity or want to try a new sport.
