About

The MSW, PhD, and the combined MSW/PhD in Social Work are awarded by the Graduate College. The MSW is offered with or without a thesis. The University of Iowa also offers Combined Degree Programs in Social Work.

Overview

The School of Social Work's mission is to develop, disseminate, and integrate excellent and compelling research-based knowledge, practice, and policy, particularly that related to children, families, and older adults. The school operates from strengths-based perspectives and systems perspectives. 

The master degree program in Social Work is offered by The University of Iowa. It educates its graduates to be culturally competent scholars and practitioners who are committed to social justice and social work values and ethics, and who are prepared to serve in and have a positive impact on a broad range of family-centered and community-based practice settings throughout the State of Iowa and beyond.

GRE admission requirements GRE® The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.

  • Three completed Recommendation Forms
  • A statement of purpose and essays as described in the Admissions Policy (Section III-D)
  • A résumé
  • Additional requirements for Accelerated Advanced Standing MSW
  • A set of your unofficial academic records/transcripts uploaded on your Admissions Profile
  • International students may also be required to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores
  • Your official GRE scores from Educational Testing ServiceOnce recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial Statement
