The MS in Clinical Investigation, offered by The University of Iowa, is awarded by the Graduate College. The degree is offered with or without a thesis.


The Master of Science program in Clinical Investigation at The University of Iowa requires 37 s.h. of graduate credit. In addition to completing the program's required course work, students must write a thesis in the form of a manuscript, or a grant proposal for a National Institutes of Health (NIH) career award or its equivalent, with oral defense. Graduate students must maintain a g.p.a. of at least 3.00. Those who receive a grade of C in 7 s.h. of course work may be dismissed from the program.

General requirements

  • At a minimum either (1) receipt of a clinical professional or doctoral-level degree (RN (BSN required), MD, DO, DDS, PhD, PharmD, DVM) in a clinical discipline, (2) enrollment in a health science professional program or 3) eligible for admission for graduate study in the College of Public Health with a goal of clinical research
  • A Bachelor’s Degree with at least grade-point average of 3.0
  • TOEFL (or IELTS during the 2006-2007 year) scores are required for international students
  • Courses in biostatistics and epidemiology with a B or equivalent (3.0) performance prior to admission
