Overview

The Astronomy program offered by The University of Iowa offers more advanced electives such as quantum computing, high energy astrophysics, cosmology, quantum field theory, advanced plasma physics, string theory, and quantum optics. Other advanced course are offered on an as needed basis through special topics.

Key Facts

The Master of Science program in astronomy requires a minimum of 30 semester hours (s.h.) of graduate credit. Students must complete a minimum of 30 s.h. of graduate work, including at least 12 s.h. from the required courses, at least 3 s.h. numbered 5000 or above, and the remainder in courses numbered at least 4000 or above. At least 24 s.h. must be completed under the auspices of the University of Iowa after admission to the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Seminars do not count toward the minimum of 30 s.h. required for the degree. All students must maintain a GPA of at least 2.75 to earn the degree.

Up to one-third of the program of study may be taken in related scientific fields (e.g., meteorology, geology, electrical engineering); selection of such courses is encouraged.

The completion of a four-year undergraduate physics degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution.
A minimum 3.00 undergraduate grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The Graduate Admissions Office will convert other academic scales to the 4.0 scale before being sent to the admissions committee.
The GRE General Test and the GRE Physics subject test are not required. However, strong grades in the GRE Physics test may be reported to support the application
The Graduate College requires a minimum TOEFL score of 81 for Internet-based testing or a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 (with no section score lower than 6.0) for international applicants whose native language is not English.
