At The University of Iowa, the MA and the PhD in Communication Studies are awarded by the Graduate College. Instruction is offered in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. All applicants apply to the PhD program, as there is no terminal MA program. 

Overview

Students may earn their MA along the way, provided they have committee approval and have completed the required number of semester hours of course work. The master degree program in Communication Studies, at The University of Iowa, is offered without a thesis.

GRE admission requirements GRE® The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.

  • A departmental Supplemental Information Form
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A set of your unofficial academic records/transcripts uploaded on your Admissions Profile. If you are admitted, official transcripts will be required before your enrollment
  • Your official GRE scores from Educational Testing Service 
  • International students may also be required to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores 
  • Once recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial Statement
