History

  • 1908

The New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair opens its doors. Governor John Franklin Fort attends the dedication of College Hall, the school’s first building.

  • 1918
As it celebrates its 10th anniversary, the New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair has graduated a total of 1,464 teachers, more than 1,200 of whom teach in New Jersey.

The University will offer a comprehensive range of baccalaureate, master’s, and certificate programs and a focused portfolio of doctoral programs that are closely aligned with the University’s academic strengths and the needs of the state.

Research

R2 Doctoral University: Montclair State is a dynamic research institution, designated an R2 – Doctoral University – High Research Activity – by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The R2 Doctoral designation signifies a continued expansion of the University’s research portfolio and doctoral programs, where students and faculty explore across disciplines for innovative discoveries in the sciences, humanities, business and the arts.

  • Academic Success Center: Course-based Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Workshops and more.
  • Center For Writing Excellence: For University students, faculty, staff and alumni who are committed to developing and improving as writers.
  • Red Hawk Math Active Learning Center: Tutoring available for those students enrolled in Math Active Learning Center classes.
  • College Writing Studio – Writing Studies: Tutoring for those First-Year Writing Students/WRIT.

Housing services

  • Montclair’s residential facilities include traditional double-loaded corridors and suites as well as apartment communities to accommodate a variety of lifestyles. Staff and students give each residence a distinct personality.  
  • Is our newest and largest residential and dining complex. Located on the north end of campus, it offers single and double room suite accommodations for nearly 2,000 students, as well as 25,000 square feet of dining space. Completely wireless, The Heights features community kitchens, closed study areas, game and recreation spaces, outdoor community courtyards, and TV and common lounges.

ICT services

Features of the 77,000-square-foot building include but are not limited to:

  • multiple lounge areas with free wi-fi, TV’s, and gaming consoles
  • equipment available for rent and for purchase

    Several areas work in close collaboration with each other and other University departments to promote a high standard of health, safety, educational achievement, accessibility and overall well-being for all of the campus community.

    Montclair State offers students a beautiful suburban campus where they can enjoy the ambience of walking to class on tree-lined paths and meet their friends to study on the lawn. The campus also boasts excellent academic, residential and recreational facilities.
