About

History

Founded in 1794, UT is big on tradition, and we are proud of our humble beginnings as the first public university chartered west of the Appalachian Divide.

Education

In 2014, more than 11,000 students graduated from campuses across the state and earned bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional degrees. The UT System enrolled a little more than 49,000 undergraduate and graduate students statewide in fall 2014. The University has an active role in helping the state of Tennessee achieve Gov. Bill Haslam’s “Drive to 55” initiative that seeks to increase the number of Tennesseans with at least a two-year degree to 55 percent by 2025. UT faculty and staff on each campus are working on improvements to graduation and retention rates, which are rewarded by state appropriations approved and funded through the Complete College Tennessee Act (CCTA).

Student Reviews

Great school with poor administration
Anonymous rated 2.5 out of 5 stars
My classes here have been wonderful, and all of my professors have been genuinely interesting and passionate. The academics, I would say, here at UT are as rigorous as you make them and the faculty seem to care about your success (for the most part). That being said, I have had horrible experience after horrible experience with UT's advising. Depending on who you talk to, the focus seems to be ...
Sub-par administration at an amazing university

This school has an amazing community and awesome opportunities for student involvement/sporting events, etc. My professors have been really passionate about their subject area and have been helpful (for the most part). One thing that I think is important to mention, however, is the administration here at UT. I have been extremely frustrated continually with the advising services (or lack thereo...
