The University of Padova traces its origins back to 1222. The motto "Universa Universis Patavina Libertas" - 'complete liberty for all at the University of Padova' - underlines the total freedom of thought that the university has always granted its teachers and its students.


The institution consists of 8 schools and 32 departments, offering 76 first cycle degree programmes, 85 second cycle degree programmes, 8 single cycle degree programmes, 73 short-specialisation degree courses, 47 specialisation schools (mostly medical ones) and a school of excellence (Scuola Galileiana di Studi Superiori.


The research departments host over 39 different doctoral programmes, many of which entirely held in English. It is one of the most important higher education institution in Italy with about sixty thousand students (40000 at bachelor level, 20000 at master level and 1400 at doctoral level), more than 2000 teaching staff and more than 2200 administrative staff.

Student services

University life goes on in: 32 Depts, 33 libraries, 43 research and service centres, 1 general hospital, 1 veterinary hospital and an experimental farm. The University operates through more than 2,000 professors and researchers and more than 2,200 technicians and administrative personnel.

Housing services

ESU provides accommodation for about 1600 students from outside Padova in its 14 halls of residence, which are situated in the city centre or near to the university buildings. Four university guesthouses are also available for short term stays. Accommodation in halls of residence is governed by a competition. University guesthouses are open from October to the end of July. The prices and quality of the rooms make them a competitive option for students, teachers and researchers in search of short term accommodation. From the end of August to the end of September the Copernico hall of residence also offers a bed & breakfast service for students and families, which includes reading rooms and Internet points.

Library services

  • Over 2 million books are available in the libraries, which not only document the history of the University over the centuries, but also accompany its journey into the future.
  • Easy access to reading rooms and a complete online catalogue (containing 14,012 electronic magazines) prove the efficiency of the University’s library system.

ICT services

The Multimedia Library is a branch of the CLA - Centro Linguistico di Ateneo Ateneo(University Language Centre).. It provides a large collection of media: audio, video, language software, digital presentation resources, etc.

Students (including exchange students) and staff of the University can check-out DVDs and videos to watch in the lab.

Medical services

Italian students registered at the University but resident in a different district may:

  • receive free guaranteed medical assistance from a doctor of their choice;
  • use their current local health authority (ULSS 16) certificate.

Student Life

Sports facilities

Padova’s University Sport Centre (CUS), founded in 1946, enables students to take part both in competitive and non-competitive sports at the two facilities in via Giordano Bruno and via Jacopo Corrado. The CUS participates in some competitions such as the Ludi del BO and the University Games.

Student clubs

Concentus Musicus Patavinus is the Centre for musical activities and performances of the University of Padova. It is composed by the groups:

I appreciated the possibility to study all the theoretical fields linked to Mathematics, but some more applications would have been better. Professors are almost always available for further explanations

Initially I has no idea wha is my major about. Then, at the end I get really enjoyed and feel passionate about the process. I really like it.

I really enjoyed studying the academic programme, and I met a lot of nice new people, but the University services are very bad.
