The University was incorporated by Act of the Parliament of New South Wales in Sydney in 1949, but its character and idea can be traced back to the formation of the Sydney Mechanics Institute in 1843, leading to the formation of the Sydney Technical College in 1878. The Institute sought ‘the diffusion of scientific and special knowledge’, the College sought to apply and teach it.

UNSW offers an extensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs. We attract talented students from across Australia and around the world.

Our 50,000-plus students come from 128 countries, making us one of Australia’s most cosmopolitan universities. Our emphasis on quality continues to push up entry standards with record demand from the State’s top school leavers.

UNSW is one of Australia's leading research and teaching universities and has a strong international reputation. Postgraduate research candidates undertake research through supervision with some of Australia's leading researchers to produce a thesis or other piece of written or creative work. You can choose from a Master of Philosophy, Masters by Research or PhD.

Uganda to UNSW
Roberta Magoba rated 5 out of 5 stars

I can confidently say that my overall study experience at UNSW has molded me into a resilient individual and further increased my sense of curiosity as well as made me more open to realities outside of the small Ugandan bubble I had known. Firstly, getting the chance to study overseas at 19 encouraged me to develop a sense of responsibility that an experience like that...

Though this may paint a very daunting picture, the environment and the people at UNSW made settling into my study experience comfortable and enabled me to stay excited for the three years that I had ahead of me. Truthfully, though the classes seemed...
