History
The history of higher education in Pécs dates back to 1367, when Louis the Great initiated the establishment of a university in the episcopal city of Pécs. As a result of an integration process of several stages, the University of Pécs was founded, which has become one of the most famous, prestigious institutions having a leading role in regional education.
Education
The University of Pécs, founded among the earliest universities in Europe, is striving towards promoting the capacity building of Hungary and the European Union in the fields of research, academics, arts and health care. The University intends to play a key role in its region in terms of intellectual output, the well-being of citizens and economic development.
Research
The university was among the firsts to launch doctoral programmes in various sciences and arts in 1993 when the new Higher Education Act reinstated the universities' rights to award doctoral titles. We started with 7 programmes in 4 Faculties. Today, we have 21 PhD/DLA schools in 8 Faculties. Nearly 2600 candidates defended their theses between 1996 and 2020.

University Ranking
Housing services
The University of Pécs has ten dormitories. They are located in quiet, residential areas of the city. The Faculties of the University as well as the city centre are easily accessible from the dormitories. Most of the dormitories have recently been renovated. The rooms are nicely furnished and contain bathrooms. Bedclothes are supplied. Rooms are offered on a reasonable price level: approximately EUR 130 per month.
Library services
Students and staff of the University can use the majority of library services free of charge after subscribing to any of the faculty libraries or the Central Library. As ours is a public library, our subscribers include people from the city and the region, students from various Hungarian universities and many other people.
Medical services
The UP Clinical Centre is one of the largest health care providers in Hungary. With its 29 health care units, nearly 3 000 staff members the centre have provided health care for several decades in Pécs and in the surrounding region. The Centre also plays an active role in the practical education of medical students and health care professionals.
Campus life
Pécs is a beautiful place to study in. It is simultaneously a friendly place and a very active city, in which you can never be bored. You can be sure you will find everything here that a student could wish.

Sports facilities
- To maintain the level of intellectual achievements and endure daily pressure, it is necessary to have ample opportunity for recreation and regeneration. The main goal is to make room for sports and physical exercise in people’s lives so that they can be an integral part of their lifestyle later.
- Sporting life at the University is coordinated by the TTK Sport Centre University of Pécs, which offers a wide range of sporting opportunities to the students and staff. The Centre organises various programmes that are attractive and accessible to everybody, irrespective of age, faculty or past training, which is a wonderful opportunity for recreation and regeneration.
Student clubs
- The Student Council of the University of Pécs (PTE EHÖK) is an organization, which deals with students advocacy and protection. We are managing our activities cooperating with each faculty’s parth authorities and the leadership of the University of Pécs.
- Our topmost task is to protect students rights and to represent their interests in cases regarding studies, refunds and benefits, dormitories and other cases connecting to the university. We are also engaged in program organization, so students can relax during their studies. Our latest institution is the PTE Student Service Enterprise, it’s main goal to provide jobs during university.
In order to ensure high international standards, strict quality control measures are applied. The Hungarian Accreditation Committee (HAC) conducts continuous institutional and program accreditation procedures and monitors the quality of educational activity for compliance with the European Standards and Guidelines. Hungarian higher education institutions and courses are accredited by HAC.
