UTS began as the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT), established in 1964.

Following the merger of the The School of Design (Sydney College of the Arts) and NSWIT in 1988, the University of Technology Sydney was officially formed.

By 1991, UTS had nine faculties with a total of 25 schools.

Today, UTS is Australia's number #1 young university and the top 100 universities in the world.
