History
By 1910, the University had developed a variety of traditions, including a coat of arms bearing a phoenix emerging from the flames and a Latin motto, Crescat scientia; vita excolatur (“Let knowledge grow from more to more; and so be human life enriched”). In 1894, maroon had become the University’s official color and “the Maroons” its nickname.

UChicago is home to some of the most venerated academic programs in the world, having established the fields of ecology and sociology, the first graduate international affairs program in the United States, and the first executive MBA program. GRIPS: A Gateway to Global Perspectives
I truly enjoy being a student at GRIPS because it offers a unique and enriching experience. One of the most remarkable aspects is the opportunity to engage with students from over 50 countries around the world. This multicultural environment allows not only formal academic learning but also personal growth through meaningful interactions. I�ve had the chance to make friends, exchange ideas, and learn about different cultures directly from the people who live them. Located in the heart of Tokyo, the campus is in a prime spot that combines convenience with the vibrant life of Japan�s capital. Whenever the academic workload feels overwhelming, it�s easy to step outside and enjoy the beauty of Tokyo or explore neighboring cities, all of which have their own charm. Japan is renowned for its cutting-edge technology, yet it also deeply values its cultural heritage. Being here, you get the best of both worlds�learning about innovation while also immersing yourself in traditional Japanese culture. For master�s students, the program requires at least 30 credits, which may sound daunting at first, especially for those in the one-year track like me. However, based on advice from seniors and my own experience so far, it�s manageable with proper planning. GRIPS provides an excellent balance between academic rigor and the opportunity to explore life in Japan. What makes GRIPS truly stand out is the supportive academic and administrative environment. The professors are approachable, knowledgeable, and eager to help students succeed. The student office staff are also exceptional�they address issues promptly and ensure administrative processes are smooth. Simply reach out to them via email, and they�re ready to assist. GRIPS is home to world-class academics and seasoned practitioners specializing in public sector policy formulation and management. This is a huge benefit, especially for those pursuing careers in the public sector. The curriculum is designed to provide practical insights and equip students with the skills needed to make a real impact in their fields. What I Like: Multicultural environment fostering global connections. Convenient location in Tokyo with access to both urban excitement and cultural heritage. Supportive professors and efficient administrative staff. A curriculum tailored to public sector professionals. What Could Improve: If I had to mention one thing, it might be the intensive nature of the one-year program. While manageable, it requires excellent time management skills, especially for those juggling professional commitments. Do I Recommend GRIPS? Absolutely. GRIPS is an ideal choice for students or professionals passionate about public policy and eager to expand their global perspectives. The university combines academic excellence, cultural immersion, and professional growth opportunities in a way that is hard to match.
Fast‑paced quarter system
I quite enjoy attending the university. It is certainly not for everyone as the environment can be quite intense and academically focused at times. In addition the quarter system means that classes move very quickly. For people who are up for the fast pace, and enjoy learning, the school is a great choice.
Fast paced learning
As a quarter-system school, everything is quite fast paced. There are a lot of class-related and course-related resources available, so make good use of them. You are required take a total of 42 classes (if you don't have any credits you can carry over from high school), which means you would need to space out your requirements well. Generally, you need to have 6 quarters with 4 classes and 6 quarters with 3 classes (if you are not planning on taking any summer classes). The school does offer a few "September courses" which are 3.5-week study abroad courses in September, before the start of the Fall Quarter, so applying for those will be both useful and fun. Also, I would suggest trying to fulfilling the core requirements during your earlier years, so that you can have mixture of only major requirements and elective requirements to fulfill later on. You will most likely have less workload this way.
