In 1898 The Maryland General Assembly authorized State Normal School #2 and a $20,000 appropriation for a building. The Governor selected Frostburg as a site because the residents offered the best suitable location without cost to the State.


We offer 44 different undergraduate majors, 17 graduate programs and a doctorate in educational leadership. Frostburg has something for every ambitious student—high school graduates, busy professionals looking to expand their career options and family members who are going back to school—at a very affordable tuition as a Maryland public university.

FSU offers so much for you to do. Your out of class time will be packed with all types of activities - from movies and top local and national entertainers to exciting clubs and outdoor adventures.

Housing services

Students may choose to live in one of eleven smoke-free residence halls on the FSU campus. The residence halls provide students with a living/learning environment which extends education beyond the classroom.

Library services

The library contains over half a million items including books, periodicals, audio-visual materials, maps, and art prints, US and Maryland government information resources. In addition, the library subscribes to 60 electronic databases providing access to 20,000 full-text electronic journals.

ICT services

Computer Labs offers:

  • Apple and Windows workstations connected to the campus network and the Internet
  • Scanning and printing facilities
  • Standard software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Internet browsers, e-mail, programming languages, graphics production and library access
  • Access to statistics packages, programming languages and database programs through academic servers

Campus life

Frostburg State University is located in the Appalachian highlands (elevation 2,000 feet) of western Maryland. The main campus covers 260 acres within the town limits of Frostburg (population 7,500).The University also offers courses at the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown, and undergraduate programs at the Anne Arundel Community College Regional Higher Education Center at Arundel Mills, and on the Catonsville Campus of the Community College of Baltimore County.

Sports facilities

Frostburg State University has one of the finest and most comprehensive varsity sports programs in the country. FSU offers 21 intercollegiate sports; 11 for women, 10 for men. Women’s sports include basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball. Men compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field.


Frostburg State University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
