Overview
This Teaching Elementary program at Frostburg State University is an accelerated teacher certification option providing a master's degree and consists of two distinct options:
- Master of Arts in Teaching – Elementary
Complete this 12-month program that includes extensive field experiences and be ready to take the helm of a grade 1-6 classroom. Students with a bachelor's degree in any field may qualify. Prerequisites for this program may be required and will be identified upon review of the student's transcript. Students are admitted in May and stay continuously enrolled until the following May.;
- Master of Arts in Teaching – Secondary
This program is ideal for those who hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent coursework in art, biology, chemistry, physics, math, English, a foreign language, music, or social studies. Earn an education degree with extensive field experience in one year and be ready to teach in a middle or high school classroom grades 7-12. Students complete the program in 12 months, beginning in May and ending in May.

- Complete the MAT – Elementary program at the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown located at 32 W. Washington St. in Hagerstown, Md.
- Complete the MAT– Secondary program on the Frostburg main campus located in Frostburg, Md.
- MAT – Secondary: Meet the educational requirements to gain Maryland certification in secondary education (7-12). Students entering the content specialization for Art, World languages and Music become certified to teach PreK through 12. This program is designed for 12-months of full-time study.
- MAT – Elementary: Meet the educational requirements to gain Maryland certification in elementary education i(1-6) in 12-months of study.
- Gain the skills required to be an educational leader.
- Complete your practicum in a local school in Allegany, Garrett, Washington or Frederick counties. Students will spend 100 days of the school year in teaching practicum.

General requirements
- Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students with 2.75 – 2.99 can be considered on a provisional basis. GPA’s under 2.75 can be considered but must go through a Unit Monitoring committee process within the College of Education to be considered special admission status. Those with under a 2.75 will be required to provide additional items for committee review including personal statement, letters of reference and possibly additional coursework or related work experience information.

- Interview – Early interviews are held in November and late interview dates are held in March and April for a May program start. We recommend applications be submitted as early as possible to allow FSU to help guide you through the application process.
