About

History

In 1909, the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee moved "to provide for the improvement of the system of Public Education of the State of Tennessee. The major thrust of this "improvement" embodied in the legislative act that was to become known as the General Education Bill of 1909 was the establishment of three normals or teacher-training institutions. 

Education

MTSU houses a wide variety of nationally recognized academic degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels. The University is composed of eight undergraduate colleges, offering more than 40 departments and more than 140 degree programs. The College of Graduate Studies offers more than 100 degree programs.

Research

MTSU has received regional, national, and international acclaim for a variety of programs and activities including distinctive offerings in programs as diverse as recording industry management, horse science, aerospace, and a first-of-its-kind academic program in concrete industry management. 

Most noticeably, our three-building Science Corridor of Innovation, with our 250,000-square-foot, $147 million Science Building as its centerpiece, represents one of the most significant investments made by the state of Tennessee toward the enhancement of science and technology education.

Career

MTSU is the No. 1 producer of graduates in the Tennessee Board of Regents system; the second-largest producer of graduates in the state among public universities; the No. 1 producer of adult (25 years old and older) and low-income (Pell Grant–eligible) graduates in the state; and the most efficient producer of graduates among the state's public universities, helping more students reach their educational goals with fewer tax dollars.

Housing services

The center is the largest and most comprehensive veterans center on any Tennessee higher education campus. It enables the about-1,000 student-veteran population on campus to have a one-stop shop to meet a variety of academic needs. It is a place for our student-veterans to study, to gather and to get help from fellow veterans, who will serve as peer advisors and sponsors.

Student clubs

Middle Tennessee State University’s Board of Trustees is being established under the auspices of the Focus on College and University Success (FOCUS) legislation that was introduced by Gov. The FOCUS Act calls for the Board of Trustees to be the University’s governing body. The Board is comprised of ten members of which nine  members shall be voting members and one  member shall be a nonvoting member. Eight  of the voting members will be appointed by the Governor of the State of Tennessee with at least three being alumni of the University. A University faculty member shall serve as onevoting Board member to be selected by the University Faculty Senate.

Middle Tennessee State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees.
