The M.Ed. in Professional Counseling offers concentrations in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. The goal of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling concentration is to prepare students to provide professional counseling services to children and adolescents or adults in mental health-related settings. 


The Clinical Mental Health Counseling concentration is designed to train students to work in mental health settings. Students may specialize in counseling children and adolescents or adults. Students who complete the concentration in mental health counseling will have met the educational requirements for licensure as professional counselors with mental health service provider (MHSP) designation in the state of Tennessee.The School Counseling concentration has an emphasis on developmental school counseling. Students who complete the concentration in school counseling will have met the educational requirements necessary for licensure as school counselors in the state of Tennessee.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • 3.00 or higher undergraduate GPA (If an applicant’s GPA is lower than 3.00, Professional Counseling faculty will consider applicant’s academic performance during the last 60 hours of his or her undergraduate program);
  • Completion of undergraduate courses in basic statistics and abnormal psychology (with minimum grades of B in both courses);
  • A combined Verbal + Quantitative score of 291 (current scale) or 900 (former scale) or higher on the GRE with scores on both the Verbal and Quantitative measures of the test above 146 and 140 respectively (current scale) or 400 (former scale);
  • Three positive references on Professional Counseling recommendation form
