Stellenbosch: A Beautiful but Demanding University
As a person of colour, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from Stellenbosch University (Stellies), especially given its history and the reputation that often surrounds it. I went in with an open mind, and I can honestly say the experience turned out to be more complex than I expected- in both challenging and positive ways. Academically, Stellies is demanding. It’s not the kind of place where you can rely on being “smart” alone. Almost everyone is intelligent in some way, so what really matters is consistency and discipline. You have to actively show up for yourself- whether that means attending lectures regularly, spending time in computer labs, or pushing through independent study even when motivation is low. The workload is intense, and exams are designed to test how well you’ve actually kept up, not just how well you understand things in theory. Socially, Stellies is always active. There is constantly something happening on or around campus- events, fundraisers, cultural activities, protests, and informal gatherings. It gives the university a lot of energy, but it can also be distracting if you’re trying to stay focused academically. At times, you genuinely need to step back and isolate yourself a bit during peak academic periods just to stay on track. If you want to stay updated with events, it helps to check notice boards in the Student Centre and join WhatsApp groups. International student groups and “buy and sell” groups, in particular, often circulate useful information about what’s happening. Friendships can take time to develop. If you are highly academically focused, it may feel slower to find your circle because a lot of social life moves quickly and is quite group-based. However, there is a wide range of people and communities, and with time you do find where you fit- you just can’t force it. One of the biggest challenges, in my experience, is how information is shared. A lot of important information is not always clearly centralised, and students often have to actively go and look for it themselves. The university tends to expect you to read your study guides carefully, keep up with rules, and regularly check emails and the official website. Because of this, it is important to stay very proactive in keeping up to date, rather than assuming key information will always be clearly announced in one place. Accommodation is another major issue. The accommodation system could definitely be improved, and in my view, more regulation around rent ceilings in the town would make a real difference. Housing fills up extremely quickly, especially for first-years, and some students find themselves in very difficult situations if they don’t secure placement early. The safest approach is to apply for residence or private accommodation months in advance, as the better options go quickly. On top of that, administrative processes can sometimes be slow. Email responses may take a few days, so patience is needed. If something is urgent, it is often more effective to go to the admin offices in person, as this usually speeds things up. If you are in residence, life tends to be more structured, with clearer routines and support systems. Students living outside residence, however, still have various administrative fees and responsibilities, so it’s important to understand those early on. On safety, awareness is important in and around town. Certain areas can feel unsafe, especially at night, so it’s best to be cautious with movement. Fortunately, Uber is widely available and usually quick, which makes getting around fairly convenient. What stands out most about Stellies is the environment itself. The campus and town are genuinely beautiful, well-resourced, and full of life. There is a strong sense of activity and diversity, which gives the student experience a unique character. It is not an easy university, but if you stay consistent and adapt, it is a place where you grow significantly- both academically and personally.
Love at first degree
I loved the degree. Inspired me to further my learning into sustainability.
An exceptionally impressive
Studying as a poor boy has taught me resilience, focus, and discipline. I’ve learned to push through challenges, value education deeply, and make the best of limited resources. Every struggle has strengthened my determination, shaping me into someone who works hard, stays hopeful, and believes in creating a brighter future through learning.
