Overview

The Geographical Information System programme at the Stellenbosch University focuses on the development and application of spatial geographical information technologies (e.g. GIS and remote sensing) and techniques.

Quick Facts:

Students are mentored to become independent researchers by encouraging enquiry into the spatial dimensions of human-environment relationships and problems through research on a mutually agreed topic for each candidate. Directed and independent literature review leads to the development and drafting of a research proposal. Research follows accepted scientific procedures: empirical investigation and technology application, spatial and statistical data gathering and analyses, graphical and cartographical display, and finally interpretation and communication in a scientific thesis report.

A BAHons degree with Geography and Environmental Studies as a major and GIS training, or a BAHons degree in a related discipline as major approved by Senate as appropriate, and with appropriate training in GIS

An average mark of 60% for the major

Proof of permanent residence or refugee status (if you are not a South African citizen)
