About

History

Worcester Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1865 to create and convey the latest science and engineering knowledge in ways that are most beneficial to society.

Established as a town in 1722, Worcester has had a front-row seat to everything from the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Massachusetts in 1776 to the birth of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century to the first-ever National Women's Rights Convention in 1850.

Today, WPI holds firm to its founding mission to provide an education that balances theory with practice, a philosophy symbolized by the towers of our two original buildings, pictured above.

Education

The university’s curriculum features a flexible, rigorous program that is project-based and globally engaged, aimed at quality experience and a positive impact for the communities it partners with. WPI faculty members--recently ranked top in the nation for quality and accessibility, as reported by the Wall Street Journal--work with students on interdisciplinary research seeking solutions to important and socially relevant problems, both on campus and at more than 40 project centers throughout the Americas, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Europe

Research

Graduate research programs include robotics, materials science, cybersecurity, and learning sciences and technology.

Services

Student services

As of July 1, 2018 the International House is composed of three departments:

The newly restructured Office of International Student Life (ISL) will serve all international student related immigration and cultural adjustment needs including new student orientations, work authorizations, travel signatures, and non-resident alien tax help.

The newly created Office of Faculty and Scholar Services will work in collaboration with the Provost's Office to serve the international faculty and scholars with immigration paperwork and adjustment to Worcester questions.

The English as a Second Language Program will continue to serve the needs of graduate students seeking help with English language skills.

Housing services

Living on campus is a wonderful opportunity and can be a great experience for many students. We want your residence hall, whether large or small, to become your home away from home, while also providing a sense of community, friendship, growth, learning outside the classroom, leadership opportunities, and fun.

As a resident, you'll be within easy walking distance to classrooms, dining halls, the Sports & Recreation Center, and campus activities, and will gain a greater sense of connection with the university and with the people you will meet.  You'll also have access to Wi-Fi, cable, movie streaming services, study lounges, and more.

Our hope is that living on campus provides you with an experience you can look back on and realize how much you have learned and grown, both academically and socially.

Library services

The George C. Gordon Library enriches WPI and the global community, inspiring and supporting research exploration and discovery, through the expertise of our staff, by providing relevant and specialized resources, user-centered spaces, and innovative services and tools that anticipate and respond to WPI’s changing information needs.

ICT services

IT Service enables the effective use of technology for teaching, learning, research, and the administrative work of the University by providing technology and mobility solutions, support, IT content and communications.

Medical services

The Office of Health Services provides accessible, comprehensive, quality healthcare (including referral services) for all WPI students.

From diagnosing illnesses and designing effective treatments to physical therapy and wellness support and counseling, the Office of Health Services works to create a healthy and thriving campus community, with a goal of preventative care and long-term well-being.

Student Life

Campus life

WPI's 95-acre campus sits high on a hill in historic Worcester, Massachusetts. This convenient central location puts students close to all the best the city has to offer, including the Worcester Art Museum, the EcoTarium, and the world-renowned American Antiquarian Society.

Sports facilities

The WPI physical education, recreation & athletics facilities are divided among three main venues: Alumni Gymnasium (Fitness Center, Pool, and Bowling Alley), Harrington Auditorium and the outdoor facilities.  All facilities are open to the WPI community during posted hours when there are no events scheduled.

Student clubs

The Student Activities Office (SAO) strives to create and maintain a vibrant campus community made up of an extensive variety of student organizations, leadership programs, and community service opportunities.

WPI offers nearly 200 different clubs and organizations, and the SAO is in charge of overseeing each one to ensure that it runs to the best of its ability. The SAO is also responsible for coordinating campus activities such as visiting shows and comedians, as well as helping students to create their own university-recognized club or organization.

Accreditation

WPI is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., a nongovernmental, nationally recognized organization whose affiliated institutions include elementary schools through collegiate institutions offering post-graduate instruction.

Accreditation of an institution by the New England Association indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied through a peer group review process.

Great project based learning system. 7 week classes can be intense but a focus on practical learning really improves your learning experience.

I was fortunate to be able to switch my previous major (robotics engineering) to electrical engineering very late in my academic career, and one thing I liked was having the option to do so, as well as create a very personalized course of study at WPI. I also liked that there was a wide variety of humanities courses to study despite being an engineering school. This and...
