The New School was founded in 1919, in New York City by a small group of prominent American intellectuals and educators who were frustrated by the intellectual timidity of traditional colleges. The founders, set out to create a new kind of academic institution, one where faculty and students would be free to honestly and directly address the problems facing societies.
Theere are 134 multidimensional academic programs which free students from conventional boundaries, allowing them to learn deeply from many perspectives. They can explore courses across our colleges and disciplines and become immersed in multiple areas of learning related to their areas of interest. The benefits of this academic freedom are enormous.
Imagine an academic experience in which you chart your own course of study and have the opportunity to engage in deep intellectual inquiry and to seek answers to pressing problems through creative discovery.
Academic study and creative learning happen inside and outside of the classroom at The New School. Across the campus, students and faculty come together in interactive, collaborative spaces to rethink, redesign, and reimagine the world.
In these labs, centers, facilities, and institutes, scholarly rigor and intellectual freedom collide, generatinggroundbreaking work that challenges the way we traditionally approach problems and their solutions.

University housing is more than just four walls and a roof. It's an opportunity to form bonds, ease the transition from home to college, and make new friends for life. In our residence halls, fashion design majors live with architects, and anthropologists collide with jazz musicians. Living side by side with students in different colleges and from different backgrounds, you'll have the opportunity to make connections, meet collaborators, and experiment in a safe and supportive environment.
We have five residence halls which are co-ed, with the option to select gender-inclusive housing, and each includes a lounge, an art studio, a music practice room, a kitchen, and washers and dryers.

The New School is situated in the heart of New York City's Greenwich Village, with an academic quad that extends from 11th to 16th Streets along Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Our urban campus places students at the center of one of the world's most vibrant and diverse communities, immersing them in the opportunities and conversations that are shaping the future. Rather than considering New York City to be merely the home of our university, we employ it as an extension of our campus and as an integral part of an educational experience that gives students access to the thinkers and doers who make the city a global cultural leader.
The Department of Athletics and Recreation offers students opportunities to take part in physical exercise and sports while meeting new people, enjoying social interaction, and building community.
