In 1828, the University of Central Lancashire was founded in Preston as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. ‘Ex solo ad solem’, or in translation, ‘From the Earth to the Sun’, has been its motto ever since – helping talented people from all walks of life to make the most of their potential.
Amongst its programme portfolio of some 400 undergraduate and 200+ postgraduate courses, UCLan has been at the forefront of developing degrees in emerging disciplines such as Fashion and Forensic Science to more recent additions such as Dentistry and, new for 2015, undergraduate Medicine which is being delivered in the UK’s newest Medical School.

UCLan is dedicated to ensuring that all our students enjoy high standard accommodation throughout their stay at the University.
There are around 2200 accommodation places in University owned and leased halls of residence.
Students will live in flats in University owned and leased halls which include a kitchen diner and some, a communal area. They have the option of non-ensuite or ensuite bedrooms, which are priced accordingly.
There are around 700 computers, including Apple Macs, in the Library. You will also find computers, including Apple Macs, in other buildings and study spaces on campus. You can also borrow laptops from the Laptop Loan area on the Ground Floor of the Library during staffed hours.
The Library has a dedicated training team who provide support and training for students.
The staff at the University’s Medical Centre are able to provide students with a caring and confidential service on a wide range of medical matters. The Medical Centre is available to help whether you are feeling ill, want family planning advice, concerned about sexual health or need information on vaccinations for a trip abroad.

The city of Preston, the home of our main Campus, is located in the heart of the North West. Preston is the administrative capital of Lancashire, has an estimated population of 130,000, excellent transport links, fantastic countryside, as well as a bustling, compact city centre. Preston has the friendly feel of a traditional Lancashire town, with a proud history. You’re close to the rolling countryside of the Ribble Valley, the striking Trough of Bowland, Blackpool, Morecambe Bay and the Southern Lakes.
UCLan Sports Arena offers a variety of activities and high quality facilities for both students and the community to enjoy recreational and competitive sport.
The Students’ Union registered charity, run independently from the University and represent over 26,000 students. When you enrol as a UCLan student you automatically become a member of the Students’ Union and with that comes some great benefits.Our mission is to ‘make life better for students’ and we try to do this every day through our wide range of activities, services and events. At the heart of our work are four key aims and that is to represent, support, inspire and connect you, to ensure you get the most out of your student adventure!Even though the Students’ Union is based at Preston campus, we are accessible to all UCLan students. I gain so much knowledge about marketing and how to be a successful researcher.
There were times when the course seemed a little all over the place and some of the modules were a little disappointing/not as varied as I wanted, but so far the lecturers have been very helpful and have gone above and beyond to create a good experience for me. I've learned a lot.
