Overview

At the Exercise and the Ageing Female programme from The University of Lancashire you'll learn to manage and optimise the health, exercise and performance parameters that are specific to this group. You'll also learn how sports medicine and clinical exercise physiology are key in supporting them. This will be taught by a full multi disciplinary team, including academics from medicine, therapy and sports science.

Learning outcomes and aims:

To understand the physiological changes and side effects experienced by women and the role of physical activity during perimenopause and menopause.

To understand the physiological changes during the lifespan and pathophysiology of osteoporosis.

To explore the psychological considerations of female ageing and menopause.

To explore the social considerations relating to exercise for ageing women. This includes barriers to exercise, adherence to exercise programs, and improving participation in exercise for women.

To understand the principles, interpretation, creation, and communication of exercise prescription.

To understand how to promote exercise for women going through perimenopause and menopause.

Programme Structure

In this module you'll learn about:

Physiological changes during perimenopause and menopause.

The risk factors that come with ageing and the role of physical activity.

The exercise considerations for the ageing female.

How to analyse the role of different exercise training types in health related outcomes.

How to review the current exercise guidelines for women experiencing menopause.
