Overview

The Counter Terrorism programme from The University of Lancashire will prepare you for the quickly evolving world of counter-terrorism. You'll learn to both identify and counter threats using a variety of methods, using our industry-standard facilities that you prepare you for a career in Counter Terrorism.

Throughout your time on the course you will engage with simulated terrorist threats. You will apply your learning in both the identification of terrorism and the measures you would take to counter the threats as they occur.

You’ll be taught using a combination of lectures, interactive seminars and self-directed study. This will help you develop theoretical knowledge and practical application of the key aspects of counter terrorism.

What you'll do

You’ll build an interdisciplinary understanding of individual and organisational involvement in terrorism, together with an understanding of national and international approaches to counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism (CVE).

The course is delivered by serving or retired practitioners, as well as guest lecturers, who are experts in their respective fields.

Develop the skills to perform the role of a Counter Terrorism Senior Investigating Officer (CTSIO). You'll devise a notional terrorist attack and then stop it from happening by using covert tactics authorised by legislation.

Future careers

Typically, MSc/PGDip/PGCert Counter Terrorism graduates continue in their specialist posts, with enhanced career prospects.

Graduates can move into consultancy, or move careers into counter terrorism-related roles within the police or security services. Progression to PhD is available within the School.
