History

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela was founded as Regional Engineering College, Rourkela in 1961. 

Education

National Institute of Technology, Rourkela is a prestigious Institute with a reputation for excellence at both undergraduate andpostgraduate levels, fostering the spirit of national integration among the students. a close interaction with industry and a strong emphasis on research, both basic and applied.

Research

The main objective of the Institute is to produce quality Engineers and Scientists in Graduate and Post-Graduate levels in various branches of Engineering and Science. The Institute is managed by the Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology (Rourkela) Society and vested with significant degree of administrative and financial autonomy.

Housing services

Large, exclusively student-occupied accommodation, maintained by the university. Residents live in study bedrooms, either alone or sharing with another student. The University, with its beautifully landscaped and carefully tended gardens, provides an ideal environment for a congenial learning experience. Here is a campus that invites students out of their hostels to spend time between classes midst greenery and a riot of floral color.

Library services

Biju Patnaik Central Library (BPCL) of NIT Rourkela, named after the legendary industrialist and statesman, and the founding Chairman of Board of Governors of REC Rourkela, is functioning since 1965. It acts as main learning resource centre of the institute which constitutes robust collections in both print and electronic resources.

Campus life

The campus of the Institute consisting of the Institute buildings, halls of residence and staff colony is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 262 hectares of land provided by the Government of Orissa. It is a residential campus offering accommodation to faculty, staff and students. The campus has all the amenities for developing personal, social and academic skills of the student community.

Sports facilities

The Institute provides its students with world-class sports facilities which include a Football –Hockey stadium named DILIP TIRCKEY STADIUM. It also houses a gymnasium with all the modern facilities. The gymnasium also has 2 instructors to help the students.

Apart from that, we also have the SACHIN TENDULKAR CRICKET GROUND equipped with flood lights. We also have two tennis courts, a basketball court with separate timings for male and female students.

Student clubs

NIT Rourkela generates multicultural awareness among students through a variety of events, and enriches their experience of living and studying. As a multicultural organization, we support international students from all the backgrounds. In order to address the interests and needs of the international student body, NIT Rourkela regularly collaborates with governmental bodies, educational providers, student societies and community organizations.

Dr. Debayan Sarkar (department of Chemistry) is the worst professor of Organic Chemistry when it comes to teaching. He focuses on research but he has zero dedication in teaching. In the run for getting higher and higher research accolades, most of the professors have forgotten basic technique of teaching the subject. All the students either have to take extra coaching or...
