Norfolk State College was founded in 1935. The College, brought to life in the midst of the Great Depression, provided a setting in which the youth of the region could give expression to their hopes and aspirations.

Student services

The Dean of Students Office assists all students, graduate and undergraduate, from their initial orientation to the College through successful completion of their academic and personal goals. The Dean of Students staff advocates for student needs, and acts as liaison between students and academic departments. The DOS provides support to students and programs designed to enhance personal growth, as well as a sense of personal authority and responsibility in each student.

Housing services

With a variety of facilities and amenities, there is something for every student. You may have interest in a Living Learning Community. We have 8 traditional halls and 1 apartment-style complex on campus. In all facilities there is a Community Hall Director/Area Coordinator/Property Manager, Graduate Assistant, and Resident Advisors. The Guide to Residential Living provides you with the rules to living on campus in addition to campus resources you may need to support your stay on campus and matriculation at the University.

Library services

The purpose of Virginia Beach Higher Education Center is to educate the student in the use of academic libraries and provide training to access authoritative information.

Medical services

The Spartan Health Center, located in Spartan Station, provides basic health services for NSU students, including diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, emergency medical care, and health education counseling.

Sports facilities

The Norfolk State University Spartan Training Zone is designed to invoke a Spartan healthy lifestyle. Equipped with state of the art equipment, the training zone is the Ideal place to GET FIT! The Spartan Training Zone stands to educate the NSU community and strive to help students, faculty and staff reach their fitness/wellness goals with the best equipment and programs.

Student organizations and groups may be established at the University for any legal purpose, provided these groups do not discriminate with regard to race, creed, color, religion or national origin. Affiliation with an extramural organization shall not, in itself, disqualify the institutional branch or chapter from institutional privileges.


Norfolk State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees.
