When NC State University was founded in 1887, the school embodied ideals that were rapidly transforming the field of higher education. Chief among them was the belief that colleges should not be reserved for a select few and that the children of farmers, mechanics and other workers should have access to the opportunities and benefits of higher education.
With 12 colleges representing all major academic disciplines:
Today, we’re a pre-eminent research enterprise that excels in science, technology, engineering, math, design, the humanities and social sciences, textiles and veterinary medicin.
Wherever it starts — in a lab on campus, in a field in rural North Carolina, on an island in the Pacific — NC State research finds the same destination: the real world. Our faculty and students engage with real problems, and they find real solutions. Our researchers have developed energy-saving smart transformers and life-saving bomb sensors, handheld radiation detectors and tissue-regenerating bandages. Our research gets results.
Each year, NC State adds $6.5 billion to the statewide economy, equivalent to creating more than 90,000 new jobs. That represents significant return on investment for the citizens of North Carolina in the form of research advances, innovative technologies, successful companies, skilled graduates and new jobs waiting for them.
Service is part of our DNA at NC State. As a land-grant university, we were founded to help create a better world. From the Krispy Kreme Challenge, to Alternative Service Break trips, to the Feed the Pack food pantry, our students serve those in need on campus, across North Carolina and around the globe. Our students’ commitment to service is a key reason NC State made the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest service-related honor bestowed on a college or university by the White House.
NC State offers students housing options that range from traditional residence hall living to campus-based village communities to on- and off-campus apartment complexes owned and operated by the university for upperclassmen and graduate student residents.
The library features the Learning Commons, one of the top student destinations on campus for collaboration, study, and access to technology; the Special Collections Research Center; the Digital Media Lab; a coffee bar and ice cream shop; and the majority of the NCSU Libraries' collection of over 4.5 million items.

Your health and safety are among the most important factors in your success at NC State. We offer a full-service, nationally recognized student health center to support your physical and mental health, and we’re committed to building a safe, secure campus environment.
University apartment complexes include Wolf Village, Western Manor and the all-new Wolf Ridge on Centennial Campus, plus E.S. King Village — an apartment community that serves NC State’s married, graduate and nontraditional undergraduate population.
In sports, the final score isn’t the only important number. Try these figures on for size: 70 intramural and club sports programs, 23 Division I varsity teams and two recreation complexes encompassing 350,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor fitness space. That’s not to mention an Outdoor Adventure program that puts North Carolina’s mountains and waterways at your disposal.
With more than 600 student organizations on campus, you can experience it all: running a daily newspaper, deejaying for one of the nation’s top college radio stations, building robots, exploring improv comedy or dance and much, much more. Whatever your area of interest, be it political, professional, social, ethnic or academic, there’s a student organization for you.
