The University of Siena, located in the heart of Tuscany, in central Italy, is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Its history has evolved alongside Tuscany’s cultural tradition since the Middle Ages.

History

The University of Siena has an ancient and rich tradition of knowledge debate.

In eight Centuries of history the University of Siena has been producing a wide range of studies in many different fields of culture.

At the early 21st Century this historical Institution has been able to face the challenges of a globalized knowledge with a wide number of international collaborations.

Education

The Italian University System is organised in three cycles defined academic qualifications are associated with each cycle which allow students to progress with their studies, to participate in public recruitment competitions and to enter the workplace and careers in the professions.At Siena University you’ll find 31 first degree courses, (bachelor’s) - two in English language - providing undergraduate students with adequate knowledge of general scientific principles and mastery of methods as well as specific professional skills; 38 second degree courses (master’s) - fourteen in English language - providing graduate students with advanced education and training.

Research

Universities represent the ideal environment for basic research and one in which it has healthy relationship with applied research.

At the University of Siena scientific research is carried out within the University’s departments, which are organized into one or more research sectors according to their aims or methods. Within each sector, research activities are launched and coordinated and proposals are defined for the establishment and organization of doctoral research programmes.

The consultancy and research activities carried out at the University for third parties are also usually performed within the departments.

Career

The Placement Office - Career Service establishes and manages relations with businesses locally, nationally and internationally to help introduce students and new graduates to the world of work. It sets up work experience placements, offers career advice and orientation.

The PO-CS supports companies in defining and using the most appropriate tools to get in touch with students and graduates of the University of Siena corporate presentations, seminars and career days; publication of jobs and internships for students and graduates.

The Liaison Office was set up to help disseminate the results of research performed within the University’s departments; support the competitiveness of small and medium sized businesses.

Services

Student services

The International Place office gathers under one roof the various activities and services offered to international students: those enrolled on or intending to enroll on one or more subjects, a degree course or a graduate at the University of Siena. The International Place supports international users all the way path from initial access to the local and university environment to their full integration.

In each of the 15 University Departments you’ll can find a students’ Office devoted to supporting enrolled and exchange students in orientation and paperworks.

Housing services

In Siena there are different housing options, from university residence to private accommodation (individual/shared apartments or single/double rooms).

Limited number of places at the University Residences owned by the Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio (Regional Office for the Right to Higher Education) are reserved for International Exchange students. Almost all of the rooms are twin rooms with 2 beds. The current price per person in the University rooms is 297,00 euros per month.

Library services

At the University of Siena you will find five area libraries (humanities, economics, legal and political science, technological-scientific, medical-pharmaceutical-biological) hosted in several different locations across the City-Campus.

ICT services

The University of Siena has its own wireless network and provide all the enrolled students with a personal password and e-mail address. The students and staff can have free access to this network in all the University sites.

Eduroam is the world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

Medical services

All students of the University, including those in international mobility, are covered by accident insurance at National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work (INAIL), in accordance with national and international laws and regulations and for third party liability.

Student Life

Campus life

Siena is a human-sized city;  the University 15 Departments, Labs, Museums and other establishments, are located in different parts of this town, some inside the ancient city walls, in the historical city, other in the modern town outside the walls. All the facilities, accommodation and students’ services are all around the city. For this reason Siena is usually defined as a City Campus.

Furthermore separate Departments and Research Centers are located in Arezzo and Grosseto, two nice and medium-sized cities close to Siena.

All these places are well connected by public transport (big or small buses).

Sports facilities

In collaboration with the Regional Authority for Higher Education Grants (Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario - ARDSU) and Siena University Sports Centre (CUS), the University promotes sports for students by offering courses for free or at reduced rates in: basketball, football, volleyball, rugby, judo, weight training, fencing and tennis.

CUS also arranges the participation of both individuals and teams in competitive sporting events recognised by the respective national federations.

Student clubs

One of the most significant Associations in the USiena Alumni, established in 2015 to promote joint cultural projects and activities through the collaboration between the most distinguished Scholars graduated in Siena and the national and international prominent personalities.ESN-GES (Group Erasmus in Siena) is part of the ESN international with the aim to create and preserve the network connections and support the international exchange students coming to our University with social and information activities.URadio is a very active group of students who daily run the University webradio, which is part of a wide Universities Radio network.

As a public Higher Education Institution, the University of Siena can benefit of the Ministry of Education accreditation and support.

In my opinion my University is one of the best in the field of Art's History. We study a lot of History of Art, there are good teachers, we study a lot and the other subject are usefull to our studies. I think that maybe in Contemporary Art we would have to study the Photoghraphy's History too because it's very important today. The teachers leave us to see directly the...

Overall, I judge my experience during the Master's degree in European Studies very satisfying. Not only has been the subjects interesting, but also many professors, while treating their subjects, have succesfully instilled a great curiosity in me. The only criticism I have is that, sometimes, learning programmes were repeated.
