The foundations of the University of Jyväskylä lie in the first Finnish-speaking teacher training college, Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary, established in 1863 by Uno Cygnaeus. He is often called "the Father of the Finnish Primary School System".
Teacher training and forward-looking work in teaching are counted among our strengths, along with natural sciences, humanities, sport and health.
We offer 20 high-quality, research-based two-year master’s degree programmes in English, which lead to an officially recognised master’s degree and qualify for doctoral studies.
Approximately 160 doctors graduate annually from the University of Jyväskylä. We educate research professionals and competent and versatile experts in various fields for the needs of society.

From the very beginning, everything started to change and it changed for the better. I had always wanted to expand my knowledge and skills in my field of interest, but never truly had the chance before. The courses, my teachers, the staff, and even the city itself have been kind, caring, informative, and genuinely supportive in ways I did not expect. I never imagined my learning journey would feel this dynamic, this real, and this true to who I am. What makes JYU special is that it takes student ideas seriously; it doesn't just welcome them, it builds on them. And although a well-designed curriculum exists, I was still able to shape my own academic path based on what worked best for me personally. My studies here have done more than deepen my knowledge. They have helped me grow into a better version of myself , as an enthusiastic learner, as my teachers warmly call me, and also as a teacher. At JYU, learning is not simply a destination to reach; it is about truly enjoying the journey along the way. I am certain that by the end of my studies, I will carry away a vivid collection of memories that I will treasure for life. More than that, I intend to pass this wonderful experience forward to every person I meet at work or in everyday life. This spirit of learning and growth deserves to go on.
This programme (EDUMA) is designed to help students improve their research skills in the discipline of education and offers a variety of specialisations. Many courses require group work for completion, and a Finnish language course is mandatory. I am learning with students from all over the world, and so far it has been a pleasant experience. Each lecture is 90 minutes long, and they can be held at 8:15 am. We have the academic freedom to make our study plan and study other courses. Recently, the tuition fee for non-EU students has been increased, and the scholarship amount has been decreased. There are benefits, such as discounted bus tickets and meals. Learning here is unique because courses are taught through interesting methods, lecturers are supportive and this experience has introduced me to different perspectives in education.

Student apartments are located within walking distance or a short bus ride away from campus.
The Jyväskylä University Library is one of the oldest libraries in Finland. Today, the Library serves over 2 000 customers daily and over a half million annually. The collections exceed over 1.5 million volumes and include 7 500 currently subscribed printed journals. Customers have access to several Finnish and foreign databases and over 20 000 electronic journals.
The University of Jyväskylä provides a wireless network on its campus areas.
The Finnish Student Health Service (generally referred to as YTHS) provides health and medical care for Bachelor's and Master's level students who have joined the Student Union.Doctoral students are not entitled to the services of YTHS.
Over the last few decades, the University has extended its grounds with two new campus areas on the opposing banks of Lake Jyväsjärvi.
Encouraged by the positive experiences of Seminaarinmäki, the Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne areas have been planned carefully and they have their own unique features.

Student associations of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science are Syrinx ry (Students of Biological and Environmental Sciences), Otsoni ry (Students of Environmental Science and Technology), Radikaali ry (Students of Chemistry), Ynnä ry (Students of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technology) and Tiltti ry (Students of Statistics).
