Founded in 1912, TSU is a comprehensive, urban, co-educational, land-grant institution in Nashville, Tennessee. The university has been served by seven presidents, including Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, who is currently serving as our eighth president.

The TSU Advisement Center is located in the Student Success Center (formerly LRC), Suite 116. The Advisement Center Staff is dedicated to assisting students define and attain their educational goals through academic advisement, encouragement, and referral to needed campus resources.
At this time, Tennessee State University does not require its students to live on campus at any point of their academic career. In recent years, the University has consistently reached capacity of its on-campus facilities, forcing students who have delayed in submitting their housing application and deposits to reside elsewhere.
Traditional library dependence on books on books and journals has evolved into growing utilization of electronic resources, such as the online catalog, e-journals, and an extensive number of databases, many of which offer full-text articles. Currently, the library's e-journal collection continues to grow, offering a wider selection of titles to support students and faculty's research at TSU.

Students suffering from complex medical/surgical problems are hospitalized at local hospitals of their choice. The university accept no responsibility for any student requiring hospitalization.
The 500 acres (2.0 km2) main campus has more than 65 buildings, and is located in a residential setting at 3500 John A. Merritt Blvd in Nashville, Tennessee. Tennessee State's main campus has the most acres of any college campus in Nashville. The Avon Williams campus is located downtown, near the center of the Nashville business and government district. Tennessee State offers on-campus housing to students. There are on campus dorms and two apartment complexes for upperclassmen. On campus facilities include dormitories Wilson Hall, Watson Hall, Eppse Hall, Boyd Hall, Rudolph Hall, Hale Hall, as well as the Ford Complex and New Residence Complex, TSU's two on-campus apartment complexes.
