The University of the Philippines (UP) was established in 1908 by Act No. 1870 of the Philippine Legislature to “give advanced instruction in literature, philosophy, the sciences and the arts, and professional and technical training to every qualified student, irrespective of age, sex, nationality, religious belief, or political affiliation.”
Research has always been embedded in the culture of the University of the Philippines. As mandated by RA 9500, or the UP Charter of 2008, the University shall lead in initiating innovations in research, and serve as a research university by promoting and implementing research and development in various fields of expertise.

I studied at open university, where all instruction was to be asynchronous and autonomous. Despite this, it is common to have group work in course requirements. While this is helpful during busy periods, bottlenecks occur due to group dynamics that I did not expect to have given the distance mode. Their biggest strength is good professors who are masters at curating study materials to enhance students' learning experience. It's a hit and miss per course, there are also other professors who take forever to submit grades and give you lower grades than you deserve since they evaluate you quickly after a year of you following up with them. Overall, I experienced the autonomy I was looking for, but that autonomy is still limited by lack of insitutional monitoring of interactions.

"Honestly, my college experience has been a rollercoaster. What I really dig is how specific my classes are getting now – like, I'm actually learning stuff I can use! And the friends I've made? Lifesavers, especially during exam weeks. But, man, the workload can be brutal, and sometimes I feel like I'm drowning in readings. Plus, finding internships that aren't just coffee runs is a struggle. Overall, though, it's been a wild ride of growth, figuring out who I am, and making memories, even if I'm constantly running on caffeine and ramen."

The 13 UPD residence halls play an important role in the total development of students. These residence halls provide an atmosphere conducive to sound intellectual, physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cultural pursuits. They are living laboratories on campus where students are able to integrate the interplay between academic and non-academic learning experiences. No other system of the University has the potential to impact the passing student more than his/her place of residence.
The athletic facilities of the College are spread over a vast area of the University compound. The complex consists of an indoor gymnasium, a 50-meter competition-size swimming pool, a four-court tennis area, a Track and Field Oval, and an archery range.Indoors, the gymnasium has two basketball courts, four volleyball courts, nine badminton courts, two dance areas, a judo-karate-wrestling room, a weight-training area, fencing area, and a table tennis area. Outdoors, the gymnasium has two volleyball courts.
