The University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo, also known as "UTokyo", was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. As a leading research university, UTokyo offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research across the full spectrum of academic activity.



The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 and is the oldest national university in Japan.


The University of Tokyo's undergraduate education emphasizes the liberal arts for the acquisition of strong communication skills, a strong ethical framework, and interdisciplinary awareness, together creating a solid framework for specialized knowledge. Volunteer activities, internships and other off-campus experiences are an increasingly important part of a University of Tokyo education.

The graduate schools of the University of Tokyo provide an optimal environment for intensive studies, and, with our university-wide research centers, students are able to gain the most specialized knowledge in their fields.

Housing services

The University of Tokyo features numerous top-class facilities. Cultural facilities include the library system, museums and botanical gardens. The University also offers swimming pools, gyms, sports fields and more at its athletic facilities. In addition, two major hospitals are located on the University’s grounds. Ito International Research Center, a conference hall available for public use, is also situated on the Hongo Campus.

Library services

The University of Tokyo Library System consists of the General Library on the Hongo Campus, the Komaba Library on the Komaba Campus, the Kashiwa Library on the Kashiwa Campus, and 32 departmental libraries at the University’s Graduate Schools, Faculties, and Institutes. The entire collection includes more than 9 million books, subscriptions to nearly 30,000 journals, and various digital resources, such as databases, e-journals, and e-books.

Student Life

Campus life

In 1995 and later in 1998, the University of Tokyo acquired the land surrounding Kashiwanoha Park and other nearby areas in the northern part of Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture to use as the site of a new campus. The Institute for Cosmic Ray Research and the Institute for Solid State Physics were moved to this new campus, called the Kashiwa Campus, in 2000.

Sports facilities

The Gotenshita Memorial Arena is a comprehensive sports facility established on the Hongo Campus. The Arena was constructed as a part of the University of Tokyo 100th Anniversary Project for the purpose of promoting the health of students and faculty members.   This Arena is equipped with a number of athletic facilities, including an all-weather artificial sports field that is lit up at night,a warm-water swimming pool filled with water made exceptionally clear due to the use of an advanced antibacterial system and a multipurpose gymnasium for a large variety of sports. In addition, the Arena holds a wide array of athletic programs, such as classes for aerobics, tai chi chuan, yoga.

I have been studying civil engineering from past 2 and half years and got knowledge on various civil related structures as well as on use of the software familiar to the studies. I studied about networking and programming and other short courses related to computer science.that is (Microsoft office specialist,CCNA,cyber security,graphic designing,web designing and etc. Now i want study software engineering in Japan university because they provide such an environment of all related and excellent materials

The level of professors and students at the Graduate Schools of Law and Politics is extremely high. I have no complaints in terms of content and knowledge that can be earned at the institution. The library is great, there is a good variety of classes in a wide range of themes and it seems to provide a less "abusive" academic environment than some other departments....
