In 1965, Florida Senator Robert M. Haverfield introduced Senate Bill 711, which instructed the state Board of Education and the Board of Regents (BOR) to begin planning for the development of a state university in Miami.
As Miami's first and only public research university, offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, FIU is worlds ahead in its service to the academic and local community.
At FIU, we search the world for solutions to global problems. At the North Pole, Professor David Kadko fingerprints the geochemistry of the Arctic Ocean. From the Aquarius reef base – the world’s only undersea research laboratory – researchers gain an unparalleled perspective on climate change and more, while the Wall of Wind brings the destructive force of a Category 5 hurricane into the laboratory, enabling one-of-a-kind research opportunities. At the Accelerated Bridge Construction center, we work to solve the infrastructure challenges of the future. And at the Center for Children and Families, researchers work to improve the lives of children suffering from mental health disorders.
At the Career and Talent Development Department, our priority is you! We are the FIU student and alumni career resource. Our highly trained staff is dedicated to helping you make your career dreams a reality. We offer help in choosing a major, resume writing and critiques, practice interviews, career transition and assessments, among other services to help you move your career forward.

Walk through GC and you might hear students playing video games in the Piano Room or see a fraternity dance off in the Pit. Head upstairs to grab a coffee in the Barnes & Nobles bookstore or visit the student newsroom and radio station. It's different every day at GC, so stop by. But don't step on the university seal at the entrance – it's bad luck.
Sport Clubs are organizations created and run by students who seek instruction, recreation, competition and socialization in sports activities at levels typically not provided through recreation, physical education classes or intercollegiate athletics. Open to novices as well as the experienced participant, these clubs have been developed over the years through student interest and leadership. Members' success has been demonstrated through such accomplishments as local, state, regional and national championships.
The Student Government Association presides over and funds the over 300 student clubs and organizations and honor societies at the university and has an operating budget of over $14 million.

I had an amazing academic advisor who really encouraged me to do my best and stay on track. I was even able to graduate a semester early during the pandemic due to the help and guidance of my professors and advisor. The Chaplin School of...
