Overview
Housed at the Biscayne Bay Campus and set amidst the tropical beauty, social diversity and cultural dynamism of Miami, the Creative Writing program at Florida International University offers small seminars, intense mentoring, and a dedicated faculty who are highly successful and award-winning working writers including Lynne Barrett, Richard Blanco, Debra Dean, John Dufresne, Denise Duhamel, Campbell McGrath, Les Standiford and Julie Wade.
Students are selected on the basis of demonstrated talent and the desire to join a hard-working, mutually supportive community of writers. Coursework includes workshops, literature offerings, and form and theory classes on Plot, Character and Poetics. The program places great emphasis upon preparation and completion of a publishable book-length creative thesis.
Career Outlook
Graduates of FIU's M.F.A. program in Creative Writing have gone on to successful careers as authors, professors, teachers, editors, and arts administrators. Program graduates have published more than 175 books (and counting) including several bestsellers, had their writing published in dozens of literary and popular journals, produced major literary conferences and festivals, received prestigious literary awards and residencies, and had their work adapted into award-winning films.

General requirements
- GPA: 3.0 undergraduate
- GRE: The verbal score of the GRE is taken into consideration particularly in deciding about TAships, but admission decisions are based primarily upon the writing sample, personal statement, academic record and recommendations.
- Applicant Statement / Letter of Intent: Required
- Letters of Recommendation: Two letters required,
- Nine semester hours of undergraduate work in creative writing from an accredited college/university
- One writing sample in either poetry (up to 20 pages), fiction/non-fiction (up to 25 pages) or screenplay (first 30 pages plus a synopsis)
- Optional Requirement: Letter of intent stating your writing interest and background and indicating your interest, if any, in a teaching assistantship
