In 1971, René Descartes – Paris V University was created through the reform of the University of Paris. This shift separated the original institute’s faculties (medicine, pharmacy, literature and human sciences, sciences, and law) into eight separate and newly created universities in Paris.


To support educational innovation, Paris Descartes University incorporates multiple concrete actions into its strategic plan, including various programs, support and advice structures, and calls for projects.


Research at Paris Descartes University focuses on a range of scientific areas. It is conducted by over 4,000 people working in 70 research units who collaborate through cooperative structures (Joint Research Institutes) and multi-disciplinary organizations (Paris Descartes University Institutes and Key Research Areas). Researchers also have access to strategic tools (platforms).

Housing services

Eighteen restaurants, 36 cafeterias, and four food trucks run by Crous de Paris offer students and staff full meals for €3.25. Most are open from Monday to Friday, but some establishments are also open in the evenings and/or the weekends. You can find their opening hours in the “Dining” section (french-languauge website) and on the Crous Mobile application.

Paris Descartes University owns 50 acres of buildings, some of which are both prestigious and listed buildings such as la Sorbonne and the headquarters of the University, on 12 rue de l’École de medecine, in the 6th arrondissement, formerly the Royal College of Surgery.

Sports facilities

The University Department of Sports and Physical Activity offers over 70 recreational athletic activities, including aikido, juggling, aerobics, salsa, yoga, Thai boxing, chess, rugby, sailing, fencing, tango, badminton… for you to enjoy all year round!

The only motivation to study is the love I have for dentistry and my friends. I feel like that only one thing needs to be improved: the mentality. This would have a lot of great and welcomed consequences!
