History
The predecessor of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) was founded in the rural town of Nagyszombat in 1635 by Cardinal Péter Pázmány, as a catholic university for teaching Theology and Philosophy. In 1770-1780, the University was transferred to Buda and later to Pest, and with the support of Maria Theresa, the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, became the Royal Hungarian University.
Education
Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) offers a wide range of degree programs to international students who intend to obtain a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree at ELTE and who want to complete the entire program in English at ELTE in Budapest, Hungary.
Courses of all programs are in English but the courses for majors in foreign languages at the Faculty of Humanities are always offered in the given language. The language of instruction and the language requirements of a particular program are indicated in the description of the given program.
As member of various consortia, ELTE also offers joint degree programs together with other European universities
Research
Research activities at the eight faculties of Eötvös Loránd University are exceptionally diverse, covering nearly all scientific fields. With regard to the main branches of science, its research and unique products make Eötvös Loránd University present in the spheres of physical and life sciences, informatics, humanities, educational sciences and jurisprudence, as well as the social sciences.

Student services
International relations of the university are coordinated by the International Strategy Office of the Rector’s Cabinet, the Department of Erasmus+ and International Programmes and the faculty international relations offices. The International Strategy Office of the Rector’s Cabinet and the Department of Erasmus+ and International Programmes belongs to the central administration under the professional control of the Vice-Rector for International Affairs.The international relations offices of the faculties work under the Faculty Dean’s Offices. They operate under the professional supervision of the Vice-Dean in charge of international relations at their faculty.

The university offers several options to get accommodation during your stay in Budapest.
You can choose from dormitories available for both Hungarian students and international students.
Library services
The library network maintained by the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) has altogether about 3.6 million documents. ULS was awarded the title ’Qualified Library’ in 2018, and its governing body is the Library Council. The collections of libraries are accessible via the electronic catalogue. Libraries have regulations of their own, thus their opening hours and services may be different.

Campus life
Budapest, the capital city of Hungary is located centrally in Hungary. From wherever you come from abroad, you can directly arrive in Budapest. Also, there is direct train or bus connection to major cities in Hungary.
With about 1.7 million inhabitants, Budapest provides an enjoyable and vibrant atmosphere for international students during their studies. The large number of sights to visit (many of them parts of UNESCO World Heritage), vibrant cultural life, the reasonable living costs, well-developed and easy-to-use public transport network, and safety make Budapest popular among international students.
Sports facilities
ELTE offers a wide range of sport activities for current and former ELTE students and employees.
As an ELTE student, you can take sport courses for credits. The courses are offered by the Physical Education and Sports Center and you can apply for these sport classes just like any other courses via the Neptun study system.
The University Athletics Club offer trainings in over 30 different sports, both for women and men. If you cannot apply for a sport course via Neptun or you are not an ELTE student, but you would like to do some sport, select from the trainings offered by the University Athletics Club. These trainings especially recommended for international students.
Student clubs
The Students’ Union has a two-tier structure: first the students elect directly the representatives from themselves, then the faculties delegate members from the representatives to the University Students’ Union (EHÖK). The University Students’ Union coordinates the work of the Faculty Students’ Unions, represents students in the university government and in the National Students’ Union, and organizes the student community life. The Students’ Union is an autonomous organization, which elects the representatives in a democratic way and all in all the heart of the students fellowship.
The degree programs are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board. Diplomas issued at ELTE are acknowledged worldwide and course credits are transferable in all countries of the European Union.
