History
Augsburg was the first seminary founded by Norwegian Lutherans in America, named after the confession of faith presented by Lutherans in Augsburg, Germany, in 1530. Augsburg opened in September 1869, in Marshall, Wisconsin, and moved to Minneapolis in 1872. The first seminarians were enrolled in 1874, and the first graduation was in 1879.
Education
In the Augsburg University Education Department, we believe in preparing knowledgeable, responsive teachers committed to educating all learners in a diverse and changing world. Developing a greater understanding of your vocation as an educator is as important as developing the knowledge, skills, and practice of a teacher. Augsburg offers a variety of programs to help future educators make a difference in the lives and learning of P-12 students.
Research
URGO provides research opportunities for Augsburg undergraduate students year-round. Student researchers work directly with faculty mentors as they gain important analytic, technical, and writing skills. In an increasingly competitive job market and graduate admissions pool, these transferable skills are highly valuable. URGO offers an 11-week Summer Research Program as well as research grants throughout the academic year for students who wish to further their study outside the classroom. Students from all disciplines are invited to participate, and past projects have ranged from biology lab work to theater performance.
Career
It is our commitment to help students and employees discern and live their vocations—to inspire them to explore their gifts and passions, and embrace how their work in the world can have purpose and significance.

Supportive Faculty, Kindred Community
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Augsburg. The school and faculty set out to make the environment comfortable for every student and work towards meeting the students where they are. With other students, I felt as though I belonged in the community, which is often difficult for me being a multiracial Muslim woman. The school has encouraged me to be a thoughtful steward in my community while being a critical thinker and problem solver.
Diverse Learning‑Sciences Cohort
An international program with various students from different countries such as the USA, Germany, Pakistan, India, Vietnam, Ghana,... Professors are extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The curriculum focuses on research expertise in Learning Sciences field. If you are looking for something more practical, you can join this program but need to gain extra practice from extraneous courses like MOOCs. On the perspective of research, this program may provide you a solid background for PhD academic path. Administrative support for international students is excellent. Canteen serves delicious food from not only Bayern region but also Asian dishes and of course vegan. They have weekly events which are sent to your uni email. Fully satisfied.
Nice, but lacking practical applications
There's good and bad, like at any university. Most professors put sufficient effort into their classes and are willing to help students, but especially in some of the social study courses, some of the professors seem to lack heart and integrity. Another criticisim not on the university itself but probably moreso the overall system in Bavaria and Germany is a huge lack in practical training for upcoming teachers.
Student services
The CLASS staff includes a Director, Disability Specialists, an Assistive Technology & Accommodations Specialist, and an Administrative Assistant, all experienced in serving students with disabilities. CLASS also employs many student workers, some of whom receive CLASS support.
Housing services
Nearly 80 percent of traditional, first-year students live on campus. These Auggies benefit from living near classes and resources like the library, bookstore, chapel, dining hall, and computer labs. Ultimately, these students blend convenience with the chance to form meaningful friendships and lasting memories.
Library services
More than 190,000 items, direct access to more than 2.5 million through CLIC, the Twin Cities private college library consortium. The James G. Lindell Library opened in September 1997.
ICT services
A combination of computer labs, classrooms, web kiosks and laptop computers are available to meet your computing needs while you are an enrolled student at Augsburg.
Medical services
Augsburg University contracts with People’s Center a neighborhood family practice clinic, to provide a wide range of health care services year-round for uninsured Augsburg students. People’s Center also accepts most insurances. Students with insurance should contact their insurance customer service number to confirm that People’s Center is in their provider network.
Campus life
When you live and learn in the heart of the city, there’s always something to do. Augsburg’s campus sits in the vibrant Cedar-Riverside neighborhood near downtown Minneapolis. Our location is a short walk, bike, or train ride away from Fortune 500 companies, world-renowned theaters and museums, concerts and sporting events, lakes and trails, restaurants and shopping, and hundreds of other destinations.
Sports facilities
Athletic facilities: ice arena, air structure, si melby gym, fitness center, racquetball court
Student clubs
