Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance. The funds from UNESCO came as Roubles from the then Soviet Union. In 1961 Parliament decreed the IITs as ‘Institutes of National Importance'. Since then, IITB has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world.
The programmes and courses offered at the institute have the flexibility to evolve and change in response to new requirements. They serve the dual purpose of building a solid foundation of knowledge and of enhancing confidence, creativity and innovation in its students.
A unique attribute of IIT Bombay's academic structure is the autonomy enjoyed by the faculty in designing and structuring courses and curriculum. All courses, however, are approved by the Senate of IIT Bombay. A favourable student-teacher ratio ensures productive, personal contact between the student and the teacher.
IIT Bombay has made concerted efforts to align its R&D focus with the national goal of achieving technological self-reliance. Students and faculty conduct research projects in thrust areas of science and engineering. The institute has ongoing academic and research collaborations with many national and international universities, governments and industries in order to keep pace with expanding frontiers of knowledge and global developments; it is also constantly in touch with national needs. Its pre-eminent position at the cutting-edge of research is reflected in its impressive list of research projects, which cater to both our national needs and global developments.
The members of the faculty of IIT Bombay are engaged in a wide range of activities besides substantial academic and research commitments. They contribute significantly to the country's growth in science and technology by making their services available to various national and state level committees. A highly motivated staff support the institute's general administration, teaching and research. IITB provides a reasonably flat organisational environment and work culture for both its faculty and staff.

The IIT Bombay campus provides an ideal setting for students to participate in recreational and extracurricular activities. IITB's a core program involving co-curricular activities for UG students in their first year is meant to provide them a launching pad for these activities. The mandate of the Student Affairs Office is to coordinate and regulate all aspects of student life at IITB. This is carried out primarily through two bodies:

The campus is connected to the city proper — an hour's distance — by buses and local trains. However, most facilities are available on campus itself, including banks, a shopping centre, two excellent schools for children, and a well-equipped hospital. All students and most faculty live on campus, in student hostels and IIT staff quarters. The peaceful atmosphere of the campus belies the wide range of activities that complement academic life.
