Overview

In fact, since we're tied to The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, you could go on to work in drug discovery, Biophysical Chemistry, nano materials, organic polymers, inorganic materials, education, and so much more. Because we believe research is critical to making you an expert in each of those fields, we want you to get into our lab immediately. 

That's why we're going to partner you with a research mentor who will give you the attention you need to get off to a strong start. As you progress, you'll be required to pick between two plans of study. In one, you'll need to take 30 hours of graduate coursework. In the other, you must complete and defend a thesis. 

Finally, with access to world-class faculty and facilities, we're going to make sure you have everything you need to get the best education possible. Our Chemistry department is home to the Central Alabama High Field NMR Facility, Center for Chemical Synthesis and Analysis, Mass Spectrometry Lab, X-Ray Crystallography Lab, Biophysical Spectroscopy Lab, and Bioenergetics Lab.

General requirements

Application to the UAB Chemistry Graduate Program consists of the following items.

  • Application. All prospective Chemistry graduate students must begin their application for admission by creating an online account through the UAB Graduate School application web page. This online account is the portal through which you will upload all your application materials.
  • Statement of Purpose. Applicants must provide a statement of purpose outlining their background and motivation for pursuing graduate studies in chemistry. 
  • Test Scores. Official test scores for the GRE and the TOEFL (if you earned your undergraduate degree from a country where English is not the official language) are required. 
  • Transcripts. Official transcripts from all higher education institutions attended by the applicant are required. 
  • Letters of Recommendation. Three letters of recommendation are required.
