  • The University opened its doors on 24 October 1883 and was formally established by Royal Charter in 1884.
  • We were named the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire and were tiny in comparison to our current size.
  • We merged with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST) in 1988. In 1999 the public name of the University changed to Cardiff University.


We are the largest provider of adult education in Wales, with the Cardiff Centre for Lifelong Learning providing several hundred courses in venues across South East Wales. We also offer professional development programmes, including custom-made courses.


We have a world-leading research community with a strong and broad research base:

  • 5th university nationally in the Research Excellence Framework on rankings based on quality
  • 2nd university nationally in the Research Excellence Framework on rankings based on impact
  • our research contract awards have a total value of £500m
  • we have won six Queen's Anniversary Prizes

Student services

We have a range of services dedicated to helping you make the most of student life.

  • Advice and guidance for prospective and current students.
  • International student support for students from outside the UK on a wide range of issues including immigration and visas.
  • Help and assistance for students with dyslexia or disabilities, including dedicated mental health advisers.
  • Funding advice and support to UK and EU students from the Advice and Money Team
  • Counselling for students feeling distressed or anxious.
  • Careers and employability advice and information, workshops, events, work experience placements and more.
  • Day Care Centre for children of both students and staff, aged ten weeks to five years.

We have a range of residences to suit individual preferences and budgets.

And what’s more, undergraduates and overseas/EU postgraduates (arriving in September) are guaranteed a place for their first year.

Library services

The University libraries hold over 1.3 million printed books, and provide access to more than 775,000 online books and journals. Our libraries each specialise in particular subjects, and are located across the University's campuses.

All our students can access:

  • Wi-Fi access across the University and its residences
  • Web-based access to your University email, calendar, filestore, virtual learning environment, library catalogue, journals, and more, via our intranet.

Student Life

Campus life

Cardiff University is made up of two large, well-located campuses.

  • The Cathays Park campus is where most of our Academic Schools are based. With wide tree-lined avenues and elegant Portland stone buildings, it's an inspiring place to study.
  • Healthcare-related courses (excluding Pharmacy and Optometry) are based at Heath Park. It's just a mile from the city centre and next to 100 acres of parkland and playing fields.

Sports facilities

We provide you with the opportunity to participate in both elite and recreational sport, across our four main centres within the campus.

There are over 60 clubs for men and women to get involved in, ranging from traditional sports (such as rugby and cricket) to martial arts, motorsports and watersports. We also run a High Performance Programme that provides support to student athletes, recognised as having outstanding potential.

Student clubs

Our Students’ Union is rated 5th in the UK, according to the National Student Survey 2015.

Run by students for students, it offers an exciting programme of entertainment, diverse clubs and societies and a comprehensive range of welfare, advice and information services – all aspects of student life within a purpose-built complex.

Great uni, staff are helpful across campus. The services available to students are useful from all types of services, there's always support available. I very much enjoyed my course, especially the applied side of mathematics. The only thing I would say needs improving is the facilities/buildings everything is old and outdated in some buildings, but the university is...
