The Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow, Russia, was established in 1992 on the initiative of renowned Russian economists (Evgeny Yasin, Yaroslav Kuzminov) and leading reformists from the Russian Government (Yegor Gaidar, Alexander Shokhin, and others) with the purpose to promote economic and social reforms in Russia.
HSE offers 72 undergraduate and more than 150 graduate programmes. There are a double-degree English-language undergraduate programme in Economics and a parallel-degree English-taught programme in International Relations and 28 English-taught Master's programmes in various areas of study. There are also numerous undergraduate and graduate programmes that offer courses in both Russian and English.
At HSE there are 221 academic divisions. Separate institutions – both disciplinary and interdisciplinary – have been established in order to achieve greater efficiency in meeting the target goals.

HSE international students have free access to the university gym which is located at MIEM HSE campus on 3, Bolshoy Trekhsvyatitelskiy pereulok (metro “Kitay-gorod”, “Kurskaya”)There is a gym in the dormitory #4 on Studencheskaya St. which you can use for free at any time.Some dormitories also offer ping-pong tables, as well as courts and props to play football, volleyball, and badminton.
Sport and tourism are very popular with students and teachers at HSE. There are HSE championships in football, volleyball, basketball, competitions in extreme sport and tourist adventures.
HSE students compete against other Moscow student teams in football, volleyball, basketball and swimming.
The overall purpose of the HSE Student Council is to give students the opportunity not only to express their opinion publicly, but also to take part in discussions and decision-making when it comes to key issues concerning educational and extracurricular activities at HSE.
The Student Council is able to propose its own vision of student life to the University administration. Student Council members have an equal role and vote in HSE Academic Council meetings, representing the position of students on all issues discussed at meetings.
