History
Opened in 1966, UMBC is part of the University of Maryland System.
Education
UMBC offers 55 majors and 35 minors, as well as 24 certificate programs, spanning the arts, engineering and information technology, humanities, sciences, pre-professional studies and social sciences. UMBC’s Graduate School offers 41 master’s degree programs, 24 doctoral degree programs and 24 graduate certificate programs. Programs are offered in education, engineering, emergency health services, imaging and digital arts, information technology, aging services, life sciences, psychology, public policy, and a host of other fields.
Research
From modest beginnings, with some of our initial external research awards secured in the mid 1990’s, we have grown into a Doctoral University with Higher Research Activity, as designated by the current Carnegie Classification, which places us among the top 220 research universities in the Nation with FY 2016 research expenditures approaching $80 Million. According to the current NSF’s Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey, we are ranked #151 in federal research and development expenditures.
Career
The UMBC Career Center empowers all students and alumni to create their own success stories. We serve students at every academic level—from first-year undergraduates to graduate students—offering career advising, counseling, networking events, on-campus recruiting and interviews, professional skills education, and applied learning opportunities such as internships, co-ops, and research. In 2023, over 1,240 employers hired our students and graduates, including leading companies like Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft. 91% of international degree recipients reported employment or continuing education within six months; 96% of those employed hold jobs aligned with their career goals.

Interaction Design & Information Architecture
The IDIA program at UB is fantastic. It gives you real world experience that leaves you with an extremely competitive portfolio before you're finished. They also support whatever research you want to do, if applicable. They are willing to support your ideas and help you attain your goals if you ask. It is a very challenging program, but I've found it very rewarding. It is also very affordable, comparatively. It isn't the easiest to be social with online classes, but you can make it work.
Cyber Security Program
As a former student at The University of Maryland University College (UMGC), I am thrilled to share my positive experience with their cybersecurity program. Let me tell you why UMGC stands out and why I wholeheartedly recommend it to potential students. The Center for Global Engagement (CGE) is dedicated to supporting and facilitating global academic initiatives by advancing the international exchange of students, scholars and faculty and by providing leadership in intercultural learning through study abroad.
Housing services
Residential Life provides facilities, services, and programs that support the academic mission of the institution and enhance the quality of life for students that live on campus. The Division of Information Technology has approximately 80 full time staff members and over 100 UMBC students that work each day to support the mission of UMBC through the delivery of IT services to the campus.
