Overview

The master's curriculum provides rigorous training in core mathematical methodologies while offering flexible options tailored to individual career goals. Graduate students can choose between two completion pathways: a course-based option culminating in a written comprehensive examination, or a research-focused thesis option that requires coursework alongside original thesis research and defense. The curriculum covers advanced topics in differential equations, numerical linear algebra, real and complex analysis, scientific computing, and stochastic processes.

Graduates are prepared to bring specialized quantitative, computational, and problem-solving expertise to technical, research, and analytical roles across industry, federal research labs, defense agencies, and financial institutions. Typical job titles include applied mathematician, data scientist, quantitative analyst, scientific software engineer, operations research specialist, and mathematical modeler.

Key facts

The traditional track is designed for students wishing to continue toward a doctorate in mathematics either at UMBC or another academic institution. The industrial track is designed for students interested in master’s degrees that will prepare them for employment in industry.

Each entering student will have an advisor who will help design a programme meeting the degree requirements set forth below. If necessary, a student may be advised to take preparatory courses at the undergraduate or graduate level. These preparatory courses may not count toward the degree.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

There are two tracks available: a traditional track and an industrial track.

Students in the traditional track have the option to complete a comprehensive exam or write and defend a master’s thesis.

Students in the industrial track complete a capstone project.
