To produce well-educated and highly-trained Physician Assistants who provide evidence-based medical services within interdisciplinary primary care environments to medically underserved populations in rural or urban communities.



The Central Michigan University Physician Assistant program will:

  • Provide graduates with the requisite fund of medical knowledge to provide evidence-based medical care in all settings.
  • Provide the graduate with the clinical skills necessary to provide competent medical care.
  • Provide the graduate with the skills necessary to demonstrate competence in oral and written communication skills.
  • Educate students to develop the essential skills of critical thinking and decision-making based on the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and the consideration of patient values, in order to be able to render quality, safe and cost-effective patient centered medical care.
  • Inculcate in each graduate professionalism as demonstrated by respectful, compassionate, and responsive interactions with patients, peers, and supervisors.
  • Reinforce collaborative learning and working styles necessary to work within the interdisciplinary health care environment.
  • Raise awareness of diverse issues that affect medically underserved populations, in order to promote the development of knowledge and skills necessary for providing quality health care for underserved patients.

    Academic Requirements

    You need the following GPA score:

    Required score: 3

    Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

    Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

    • completion or near completion of an undergraduate degree
    • completion of a minimum of 500 patient care hours
    • a minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA
    • a GPA of 3.0 or above in each prerequisite
    • completion of prerequisite coursework within a six (6) year timeframe (from the time of applying to the PA program) in each of the following areas:
    • no more than two prerequisite courses can be outstanding at the time of application
    • all prerequisite coursework must be completed by December 31 of the application year
    • completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) with the scores sent directly from ETS to CASPA.

    Graduate Assistantships
    • This primary form of financial assistance for full-time or part-time graduate students provides tuition remission, a stipend, and resident tuition rates for the duration of the
    • award.
    • Each department offers its own graduate assistantships. Please check with your department for application instructions.
    Graduate Fellowships
    • The College of Graduate Studies awards one-year competitive fellowships which provide tuition remission plus a stipend.
    • All applicants must submit an official copy of a current GRE or GMAT score with their application before the deadline, which is the first Monday in February. The one-year Fellowship is only for first year graduate students. It grants resident tuition rates and provides a tuition scholarship of 20 credit hours, plus a stipend of approximately $11,000.
    • A variety of jobs are available on campus, and all students may apply for campus employment after arrival on campus.
