Overview
Counseling from East Tennessee State University aims to prepare students to function as knowledgeable, ethical, and effective counselors in a pluralistic society. The objectives of the M.A. Program in Counseling concentrations are reviewed and updated regularly to reflect the field’s ongoing development of knowledge, skills, experiences, and values necessary for counselors to function effectively in the roles for which their program prepare them, as well as to assess successful achievement of Counseling Program goals.
Careers
- The M.A. concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CACREP accredited) prepares individuals for employment as counselors in entry-level positions in diverse settings such as mental health/substance abuse centers, juvenile court/public offender systems, residential treatment centers, non-profit organizations, etc., and for private practice under supervision/moving toward state licensure.
- The M.A. concentration in School Counseling (CACREP accredited) prepares individuals for employment as counselors in entry-level positions in public elementary, middle, and high schools (K-12).

- GRE - Required ONLY if GPA is below a 3.0
- 1200-1500 words clearly addressing the following: An autobiographical statement explaining how your interest in pursuing the degree in counseling/concentration developed, your skills and experiences in advocating for and helping others in their personal and social development, the place of social diversity/justice in your thinking and future work, what you hope to gain from the degree, and goals upon completion of the degree.
- An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Applicants to the Elementary/Secondary School Counseling concentration must complete a successful background check in order to be fully admitted
