About History at the University of Rhode Island

Graduate students enrolled in the history program should declare a primary concentration in one of the above-mentioned fields and a minor concentration in another field. The anthropology and archaeology option, however, is available only as a major field of study. Students can, however, choose a minor from another department such as English, labor and industrial relations, marine affairs, political science, or women’s studies.

Students may take up to six credits of graduate work in history at Rhode Island College, and graduate students at Rhode Island College may take up to six credits of graduate work at the University of Rhode Island. Students also may request permission from the graduate school to transfer up to six credits of graduate work from another university.

Career

All graduate work stresses independent research and is designed to promote critical reading and writing. The diversified program-with its requirement for work in more than one field of history and the opportunity it offers of work in another discipline-should be of service both to students who wish to continue their graduate education at the doctoral level and to those who are interested in secondary teaching or a variety of other fields. Students are required to develop a systematic program of studies with the director of graduate studies during their first semester as a master’s degree candidate.

Recent GRE scores for verbal, quantitative and analytical writing tests (optional; but required for students seeking admission to the Archaeology and Anthropology program). TOEFL or IELTS scores for international students.

At least two letters of recommendation from former teachers

Applicants who wish to be considered for a teaching assistantship should (as part of their personal statement) include a paragraph stating their interest and any relevant experience teaching or tutoring. They also should ask that at least one letter of recommendation address any relevant experience and/or potential as a teaching assistant.

Writing sample (preferably 10-20 pages long and demonstrating effective writing and research skills)
