History
Queen Mary’s proud history is built on four institutions stretching back to 1785. All four institutions, St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, The London Hospital Medical College, Westfield College and Queen Mary College were founded to improve the lives of people with less privilege.
Education
Queen Mary offers students an exceptional learning experience, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and teaching inspired by world-leading research. The university adopts an innovative learning environment, where students and staff collaborate to create excellence in education, engagement, employability, and the learning environment itself. Many programmes offer the opportunity to take part in placements, work experience and networking events with some of the UK’s leading employers. The university’s location in the heart of London means students also benefit from easy access to the UK’s financial, creative, entrepreneurial, legal and political hubs.
Research
Queen Mary is a leading research-intensive University. Ranked 31st in the world (THE 2026), and joint 7th for the quality of research in the latest 2021 REF.
Research carried out by Queen Mary's Professors Jonathan Grigg and Chris Griffiths highlighted the effects of air pollution on children and was instrumental in the introduction of the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
The University's BioEnterprises Innovation Centre in Whitechapel supports drug discovery start-ups and has created over 500 jobs in science.
Queen Mary has partnerships with major industrial firms such as Pfizer, IBM, and Huawei.

The University’s central London location provides opportunities for placements, internships and work experience with some of the UK’s leading employers. Queen Mary’s award-winning Careers Team support students throughout their time at Queen Mary and up to three years after graduation.

A Dynamic learning experience
Having just applied to Queen Mary University, I am filled with excitement and a touch of nervousness as I prepare for this new chapter in my life. This will be my first time studying at a university in London, and I can't help but feel eager about the unique experiences that await me.One of the aspects that attracted me to Queen Mary is its reputation for academic excellence. I have heard numerous positive testimonials about the faculty, who are renowned for their expertise and approachability. I am hopeful that this supportive learning environment will foster my intellectual curiosity and allow me to engage deeply with my studies. The course I applied for aligns perfectly with my interests and career aspirations, and I look forward to the challenges it presents.The campus itself is another factor that excites me. Pictures of the modern facilities and vibrant student life have only intensified my anticipation. I'm particularly keen on exploring the various societies and clubs offered there, as I believe these will provide excellent opportunities to meet new people, make friends, and immerse myself in the diverse culture of London.While I am enthusiastic, I also acknowledge that starting university can come with its challenges, such as adapting to a new city and balancing academic responsibilities. However, I see these challenges as opportunities for growth. MSc Neuroscience at QMUL – A Reality Check
If one is considering the MSc Neuroscience at Queen Mary (Blizard Institute), here is an honest breakdown of what the first few months actually look like. It is a rigorous degree, but the experience is quite different from what the brochure suggests. The Good: Industry Exposure The strongest aspect of the course so far is the diversity of the teaching staff. We aren't just being taught by career academics; we have lecturers from various industrial backgrounds, clinicians, and researchers. This is a massive plus point as it gives you a realistic view of where this degree can take you—whether that’s into pharma, clinical practice, or further research. The content itself is high-level and interesting. The Reality Check: Class Size & Support This is where my experience has differed most from my expectations: Class Size: The cohort is much bigger than I expected for a specialized MSc. If you are hoping for a small, intimate seminar vibe where the professor knows your name, this isn't it. Lack of Interaction: Because of the class size, there is very little opportunity for 1-to-1 interaction with teachers. It feels impersonal. You attend the lecture, you leave, and that's often where the contact ends. "Fend for Yourself": This is the biggest frustration. The instructions regarding assignments are often vague or unclear. When you ask for clarification, support isn't always readily available. You are largely left to figure things out on your own. You need to be extremely self-reliant to survive here. The Workload: High Intensity Do not underestimate the intensity of this course. The study load is huge. There are weekly classes that you cannot miss, and the preparation required for them is significant. Because the guidance is sometimes lacking, you end up spending double the time just trying to understand what is required of you, rather than just doing the work. Verdict This course is academically rigorous and will push you. If you are an independent learner who thrives on "sinking or swimming" and wants exposure to a wide range of professional insights, you will get value from it. However, if you are looking for a supportive environment with clear guidance and mentorship from staff, you might find the first semester overwhelmingly chaotic. Advice to future students: Be prepared to be proactive. You will need to build your own study groups to decipher assignment briefs, because the hand-holding here is nonexistent.

Housing services
Queen Mary is the only campus-based Russell Group university in London and offers accommodation to students at their central London campuses in Mile End and across zone one, as well as dedicated accommodation for postgraduate students at Aspire Point in Stratford. Campus life
Queen Mary has five campuses across central and east London. Mile End is the University’s primary campus, nestled along Regent’s Canal, the vibrant campus offers shops, cafés, a gym, and green spaces. Accommodation for over 2,500 students is available at Mile End, with excellent transport links across London.
Medicine and dentistry students have campuses at Whitechapel and West Smithfield, each with unique facilities. Postgraduate law is taught at Holborn, near the Royal Courts of Justice. Charterhouse Square campus, in the heart of London, hosts the Barts Cancer Institute, the William Harvey Research Institute, and the Wolfson Institute of Population Health.
Sports facilities
Qmotion is the Students' Union's Sport and Fitness Centre, located at the Mile End campus. It offers three floors of amazing facilities including a fully equipped gym, female-only gym, studio spaces, squash court and sports hall.
There's a fun, welcoming and inclusive environment where you can exercise, make friends and de-stress. All members can also access a free personalised training programme every 6 weeks from fully qualified fitness instructors. Plus, there's also over 20 daily group exercise classes a week including yoga, circuits, HIIT and zumba.
Student clubs
Queen Mary Students’ Union has over 300 societies and sports clubs. There's something for everyone – from anime and archery to yoga and zoology.
