Overview
Prospective Advanced Neonatal Practitioners build on their clinical practice and follow a training process that starts with the Advanced Neonatal Practice (Online) programme at Queen Mary University of London . This programme fulfils the pre-requisite qualification for the transition from nursing to advanced clinical practice.The programme promotes critical thinking in the context of advanced clinical practice and is designed to develop the following capabilities:
- Provide and promote safe and effective clinical care to newborn infants in partnership with individuals, families, carers and stakeholders
- Provide values-based facilitative and strategic leadership across the neonatal clinical care pathway
- Advocate and contribute towards a positive learning culture that enables individuals and teams to continuously develop and improve care for newborn infants
- Advocate and contribute towards implementing evidence into practice and facilitating continuous quality improvement of local, regional, national neonatal care delivery and outcomes
Career paths
The NHS has a 30-year history of training neonatal nurses as Advanced Neonatal Practitioners, who after qualification acquire the clinical skills of ‘tier 1’ doctor (also referred to as Senior House Officer or Junior Clinical Fellow) and progress to work in the same capacity as ‘tier 2’ doctors (also known as Registrars or Senior Clinical Fellows).
