History
Founded in 1735, the University of Miskolc (UM) originated as a mining and metallurgical institution. Over two centuries, it has expanded its scope, emerging as a comprehensive higher education hub with emphasis on engineering, while also embracing economics, law, humanities, health care, and music.
Education
As a comprehensive university UM offers more than 100 study programmes at bachelor, master and doctoral levels to all interested and motivated students in a wide variety of courses.

Research
The University of Miskolc as a Centre of Excellence and Research University with its 7 Doctoral Schools hosts several research institutes in its campus which form organic parts of the University in the academic, research and development work, and are closely connected to the economic players of the region as well as are actively involved in international research projects as well. These are the Research Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Regional University Knowledge Centre of Mechatronic and Logistic Systems, the Mechatronics and Materials Science Cooperation Research Centre, and the Innovation Management Cooperation Research Centre.
Career
The mission of the Career Center is to connect students and the business as well as industrial world by providing them the following services:
- organizing job and career fairs at national level at the premises of the university
- assisting students in finding practical placement, internship opportunities
- managing and recruiting job offers of partners and the business world – employee database
- training students to job interviews, career consultation

University Ranking
Student services
Well organized offices with highly professional administrative staff await international students at the University of Miskolc. The International Relations Office, as the central unit for incoming students deals with student recruitment, entrance and administrative issues of students, whereas colleagues working for the Dean’s Offices are responsible for the academic progress of students. Office hours are long, staff is flexible! The long established, highly motivated buddy-system is responsible for the social integration of international students into the university life.
Housing services
Accommodation is provided to all international students automatically i a modern and well-equipped building with 600 beds, offering a wide range of services to students which include: restaurant, fitness room, massage, 24-hour security guard service etc... The Hotel is located in the territory of the campus in the vicinity of a sports complex. The two-bedded apartments are comfortable, with free WI-FI and an equipped kitchen (cc. 130EUR/month/person).Should you prefer living on your own, a mentor student will help you in renting a flat in the city center.
Library services
The Central Library, of which total stock contains more than 600,000 books and 2,700 journals serving around 100,000 users every year, awaits the students with its large reading room and a computer center. The services of the library include: lending books, making copies, scanning and printing. The registration fee for students of the University is 3EUR/academic year.
ICT services
Free Wi-Fi is available after a short registration in the IT Service Center in different areas of the University. In Uni-Hotel, where international students are accommodated, all rooms have broadband internet connection as well as free WiFi which can be used free of charge.With annual enrollment ( 2 EUR/year) students can also use a huge computer park free of charge in the Central Library of UM.
Medical services
UM assists international students in taking out a health insurance at a discount price at one of insurance companies located in Hungary. The related healthcare providers are private clinics, with 0-24 telephone service, off campus, but only a few minutes away from the campus. Mentor students accompany international students in all cases to the clinic to ease their way.
Campus life
The campus has been awarded the title of “the most beautiful campus of Hungary” thanks to its lovely park area and greenery populated with birds, squirrels and owls. Most academic buildings and research institutes of the University are located in the campus except for the Institute of Music which is in downtown within an easy reach. The campus is a self-contained unit as it is the home of not only the academic buildings, but also the research labs, workshop halls, canteens, clubs, libraries, student hostels, small shops and bars as well as a huge sports ground with a swimming pool. Supermarkets and the downtown are within an easy reach by public transport not more than 5 - 15 minutes.
Sports facilities
Whatever kind of sports you do or you are interested in, you have a good chance to find place for it here: fourteen tennis courts, an athletics track, several basketball and streetball courts, a football pitch, a sports hall and a swimming pool awaits you at the campus. There are fitness rooms and gyms in the Sports Hall, while a gym equipped for special weight training is located in one of the student hostels, free of charge. If you are looking for free, multi-cultural sport activities you can join the regular PE classes of the university and do Fitness, Aerobics/Zumba, Thai boxing, Karate, Wing tsun kung fu, Basketball, Handball, Volleyball, Tennis, Badminton, Table tennis or American football.
Student clubs
A buddy system of Hungarian and international students supports incoming international students in their academic, social and practical integration process. Buddies organize cultural and social events such as trips to various regions, film nights, wine-tasting, international food festivals and last, but not least, parties. Rockwell Club situated in the campus with its three different music halls offering different types of music awaits party goer students on weekdays and weekends as well. The Student Government of the University of Miskolc also organizes numerous social events during the academic year like the Freshman’s Ball, Sports Day, MEN (a three-day music festival) etc.
All study programs (BSC, MSc, PhD) of the UM are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee as well as overall institutional accreditation takes place every 5th year.
