March 1903: The Nebraska Legislature appropriated $50,000 to build a normal school in western Nebraska, touching off a heated competition among several communities bidding to be selected. On September 1, 1903, after 111 ballots, the State Board of Education awarded the school to Kearney for its offer of 20 acres and the Green Terrace apartments for a dormitory.

Welcome to the new-look Nebraskan Student Union – the heart of campus life and activity for UNK students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests.
The union is the main gathering spot on campus, a place where students connect with each other and the community. It’s one of the first locations future Lopers see when they arrive on campus and a building where students meet throughout their time here to enjoy a meal, grab a cup of coffee, study for that big exam or hang out with friends.
The University of Nebraska at Kearney ("UNK" or the "University") recognizes the importance of providing reasonable accommodations in its housing policies and practices where necessary for individuals with disabilities to use and enjoy University housing. Request for accommodation is made fewer than 60 days before the individual intends to move into University housing, UNK cannot guarantee that it will be able to meet the individual’s accommodation needs during the first semester or term of occupancy.
The University of Nebraska Kearney Library was built in 1963 and named after professor of English Calvin T. Ryan. An addition to the library was completed in 1981-82 that doubled its size. Study and classroom seating accommodates over 1,100 library users.
University of Nebraska Information Technology Services, a unified organization serving the NU system as well as the Kearney, Lincoln and Omaha campuses, is actively engaged in efforts related to COVID-19. ITS works closely with campus planning teams to accommodate and support action plans as they take shape.

Our department is made up of four offices to help students' stay healthy in mind and body while at UNK. Our mission is to engage, educate and empower optimum physical and mental wellness among the diverse student community in support of academic excellence.
Campus is comprised of 515 acres, including the soon-to-be-developed University Village. UNK has more than 48 buildings including classrooms, labs, residence halls, and athletic venues. The proximity of the campus offers easy access to the city's vibrant and growing community including: cultural events, shopping centers, outdoor recreational facilities, affordable housing, award-winning restaurants, as well as hockey, musical shows, plays, and a variety of concerts, many within walking distance of the campus.
Campus Recreation provides programming and services to the UNK community to promote self-discovery, sportsmanship, learning and an appreciation for personal wellness. All Campus Recreation, Intramurals, and wellness facilities and events are available to current UNK students, faculty, and staff. Faculty and staff members interested in purchasing a membership can stop by the Campus Recreation office located in the Wellness Center.
The Nebraskan Student Union and Student Engagement Office supports UNK's 150+ recognized student organizations and groups.
