In 1983, Halmstad University was recognised as an independent institution. At that time, it had a few hundred students and a staff of 40 people. But everything started in the 1970s, when the so-called N-committee was set up to pave the way for a university in Halmstad. On this page, you can find some highlights fråm the history of the university.
Halmstad University is an independent university offering 66 degree programmes and 175 courses in exciting, cutting-edge areas.
Our degree programmes have gained recognition for their relevance in and beyond the academic world, and for their focus on innovation to answer the real and current needs of present and future businesses and the society they operate in. We believe that a close relationship with the community we serve, particularly the businesses and organisations within, cultivates the most fertile ground for innovation that serves us all.
The research at Halmstad University is internationally renowned and is pursued in interdisciplinary innovation and research environments. The University takes an active part in the development of society through extensive and recognised collaboration with both the private and public sector.
The main part of the University’s research and education is represented within three areas: Innovation Science, Information Technology, and Health and Lifestyle. These areas form the basis for the University's activities, and it is within these areas that the University offers doctoral education.
We’re located in one of Sweden’s greenest, most liveable and most innovative small cities, in Halland province on the beautiful southwest Swedish coast. Halmstad offers you a peaceful study environment and an inspiring seaside and riverside setting that includes Sweden’s most famous beach – Tylösand.
Being a small city, Halmstad enables close relationships between students and between the university and businesses in our community. Halmstad’s ideal size also makes it convenient to get around. Just a few minutes by bicycle or bus takes you from campus to the city centre, sandy beaches or forested Galgberget Hill. Still, Halmstad is close to big city life when you need a change of scenery.
